    Re: Welcome!!

Hi there all and thank you for the welcome. Bit of confusion finding intro forum and hope where I am typing now is correct. Re what I do is low light time lapse and stills without using flash. Weapons of choice definitely not plastic body and are Nikon various or Fuji S5 Pro attached to D series f2.8 or faster and not necessarily late generation vr or auto lenses. I like Nikon glass. Subject interest ranges from panorama to macro, b&w portrait, action, and anything considered unphotographable such as reproductions of damaged photgraphs. Originally raised on a diet of Tmax and kodachrome and fuji velvia and still have a jobo auto lab but not used much now since dragged kicking and screaming into dslr age and havent looked back since discovering dslrs can see things in the dark that humans can't and the photo lab is now an Eizo Colouredge monitor computer screen. Might mention I just love photographing photographers without being noticed and making happy snaps for my 9800 Epson. Project at present is combining a time lapse sequence and stills sequence of a night event and this one has lightning flashes and fireworks and choir music of a choir actually on site at the time and am having much fun at present [one f and one n not ffunnn] trying out video software that will allow me to have my logo and music combined with fps speed controllable as well. If any suggestions I would love to hear. best so far is Corel video studio 12 but havent found the fps control button yet and hope pro version has one somewhere and hope Corel will talk to me soon about this since I asked them. I want to be able to vary the fps speed of playback in final avi file cdrom that anyone can use on a windows computer. Great stuff for weddings and special events, combining camcorder footage from tripod mount camcorders all on auto together from various aspects. Future projects will be concerned with mounting cameras onto balloons and motorised model aeroplanes and while point and shoots are good they have one fatal flaw. Dont crash the aeroplane. The lenses dont take to being being dropped very well and I have taken a few ebay faulties apart like Nikon S200 etc and the result usually the same "lens error" or "system failure" meaning lens barrel system sticking and irrepairable by me so far but I am working on it. Apart from that they are perfect=weight is good, battery power good, autofocus good and so on and if I can just graft all that miniature electronics to an older nikon autofocus lens= happiness but weight is always a concern. Well- thats it for intro I think except to say I dont do smilies except ones like this ;]] I had a bad time with virii problems from some yahoo users years ago and they all used them. I dare say thats all changed now but good habits die hard and who knows I might change. Cheers all. Mark

    Hello,
The name is Chris. I am a 16 year old student from the DC metro area. I started out with a Nikon d40x, but now I stick with an old film slr (hope to get a leica m6 soon) and a holga. I just recently started developing my own black and whites as well.

oh how I'm digging this forum

Hello all, just wanted to introduce myself a bit. I discovered this most excellent forum while searching for an answer about a photo printer (which I posted in the help area of this forum yesterday) and felt kinda rude just jumping in asking questions without a proper introduction.

My name is Camille (though that username was taken, hence the addition of "Lady" as I am one and all). Photography is The Final Frontier for me, an art form which has always interested me, yet I hadn't been able to fully explore until more recently.

As a kid, I envied the others in my high school taking photography class. My family just didn't have the kind of money to purchase the necessary camera, so I kicked about with my little 110 hehe and did my best.

I do think of myself as an artist, and have always enjoyed perusing museums and the artwork of others, in all forms.

A good friend of my (new) husband and I is a retired Time/Life photographer, named Ben Martin. He was once married to an actress on a show called "Dark Shadows", and I believe this is how my husband met him, through his now-ex wife? Anyway, I've been able to view many a fantasmic photo from Ben, while hearing some of the most incredible stories of his adventures in the world! He is truly an insiring character and his photos are just incredible: photos taken of the Kennedy family at the funeral, he was Nixon's White House photographer, did a whole book of photos on Marcel Marceau, was the first American allowed to meet and photograph Fidel Castro after the 1960's Cuban 'scare'...photos of Martin Luther King, unknown numbers of other celebrities. Over the past few years, we've seen Ben maybe a handful of times, and I've never wanted to bother him with newbie "can you offer me some tips" kind of questions. Guess I'm just in awe in his presence, content to listening to stories behind his fantastic photos. Just wanted to share that little Ben-story as I feel I'm so incredibly lucky to know him (he even took my daughter's prom pictures.... how cool was THAT?!)

Anyhow, finally as life has improved for me, and I've obtained my own camera. A Cannon EOS 30D. I'm finding what's in my eye and heart can't catch up with this rather high-tech (to me, at least) camera and what it can do fast enough for me! (I'd think you were all at this point some time ago, right?). Often I'm lucky, but I can't always catch what I see/want to frame in a picture with what the camera is doing with light/exposure/etc. It's a learning process, I know. Exciting and frustrating all at the same time.

When I look at the photos of others, I recognize what elements find pleasing, what I am enjoying, what seems a little off, what I'd like to see more of in a picture, etc. What I don't always know, is how that photographer could go about getting his camera to do what is in my head, if it's possible (does that make any sense?)

I'm currently enjoying reading the many threads here, especially the photo critiquing section, where I view the photo, see what I think, and then listen to the feedback from the advanced photographers. I believe I can learn an awful lot about photography just sittin back and reading, maybe asking, maybe uploading a photo for feedback in time. SO glad I found this site.

Sorry for the ramble, I'm just really excited to find this forum! Nice to meet you all, bear with me as my technology catches up with my creativity! Thanks for reading.

    Re: Welcome!!

I thought it about time I jump in - instead of lurking around as I've been doing these past two weeks. :blush2:

I've read and read and read lots of different threads and hope I'm learning something. It seems like a wonderful community with everyone very willing to help, answer questions and make suggestions. I'm entranced.

I'm awed by all the fantastic work I've seen and can only hope one day to accomplish something similar.

I've only had my dslr for a couple of months, so I'm still learning what it can do or maybe I should say what I can do?

I'd classify myself as a hair above beginner but still with tons to learn. My favourite subjects are my children, of course, but hoping to branch out and see if I have the 'eye.'

    Okay, enough of me.

    Re: Welcome!!

    Hey Everyone!
Given the fact that I have peen poking around for a couple weeks now and have been posting a little, this is a bit past due. I haven't done the message board/forum thing much before, and didn't realize that there was an intro place. Please forgive the tardiness. ;)

My name is Katherine. I just turned 29 at the end of July, which is something I think is pretty darn exciting! I live in Montgomery, AL with my husband. I'm a Fine Arts/Painting major and will be graduating in Fall of 2010. I have never done any serious, or even semi-serious, photography before. It has always just been snapshots to remember a place or a way to try and capture the feel of something for a later drawing or painting. However, the more I start to see what all is possible, the more I think that may change.

I'm really glad I found this site. It seems to have a great atmosphere. The people I have talked to so far have been very helpful and kind. I also think I have learned more here than anywhere else. I look forward to getting to know more people and seeing everyone's pictures!

But for now I am going to take a leap of faith and post a couple pictures!

    Re: Welcome!!

Hello all, just found the forums while looking for help on some how-to's. Looks like an amazing wealth of information here and look forward to reading the forums, learning and getting to know some great photographers.

A little about me, I'm a photographer somewhere between a casual weekender and someone wanting to do it professionally. Love photography, and would love to do it more, when time permits.

I love nature and wildlife photography, but dabble in headshot photography and wouldn't mind making that a bigger part-time gig to pay bills.

I recently purchased a used Canon 5D after starting with a Canon 20D several years ago. So far I love it, getting used to it, and figuring out how to maximize its potential. I will post photos in the appropriate forum/s and I look forward to thoughts/critiques and general interaction.

    Thanks

    Craig

    Re: Welcome!!

hello... again. i never actually posted in here when i joined. to be honest, i only joined because i really needed a question answered, and it was. but i've found myself always coming back to see what's going on in this forum. so now that it's obvious to me that i'll be sticking around, i decided to make a new account with a name that actually means something (at least to me). i didn't put much thought into the original name, that's why it's random one.

so as long as it's not taken, 'herg' will be my new name around here. it's part of my last name, and a long time family nickname.

and this is the best photography forum on the net!

Howdy everyone! Im new here and in need of help, advice and whatever else you think I need. I have worked in tv news for 15 years as a videographer, producer and assignment editor....but am now also working for a newspaper as a freelance photog. I bought a Canon Rebel off of ebay dirt cheap and Im pretty happy with it so far. For shooting fires, crashes, shootings and assorted other mayhem, it works fine.

Ive been assigned to cover an aspect of the G20 summit in Pittsburgh next month. I have to use the DSLR for most of that assignment. SO Im here for advice and to learn something beyond the normal "point-shoot & pray". Please have patience with me, Im a newbie at shooting still shots!

Hello! Time to delurk. My name is Christa and I live in Fruitloop (Fruitland) Park, FL. I've been here almost a year and for the first time in my life, I have access to several people with boats that humor me and take me out on Lake Griffin to hunt birds and gators with my cameras.

In my profile it says that my primary gear is my trusty P3 but in actuality it's the one I wish I could still afford to shoot with. Film is expensive in my current situation so with every click I hear the change drop. I mostly use my p & s digitals, a Kodak Z650 6MP (my favorite but my mom and her boyfriend latched onto it) and a new-but-not-yet-loved Kodak Z1485 14MP that I got for my birthday from them. I prefer the reach of the Z650 and it takes great photos. The Z1485 is an AF nightmare but does okay in certain situations.

Right now I have film loaded in four cameras - my P3, my new-to-me Canon AE-1, my 1940 Argus C3 and my 1957 C3. I REALLY want a DSLR but how does one go about requesting a $1000 Christmas present? I've got a few months to figure it out.

I've been lurking on here for a while and this is a great place. I've learned a lot reading answers to other people's questions.

Welcome to the forum. I figure there are 10 times more people reading what we write than actually contributing. Allows us to ramble on a bit..

Are you sure you need to spend $1000 on a DSLR for Christmas? Even the entry-level systems are very good. Often they have same components as the low-end pro models (sensor, image processor) but the body and lens are simplified.

If you want to justify the price of a DSLR - work out how much you spend on film and processing every year. This expenditure is mostly gone. I was running at about 140 films/year and the DSLR paid for itself in a few months.

    Charles,

Thanks for the welcome. I'm looking at the entry-level kits with tele zooms and factoring in the cost of Lightroom and a good CP. I have regular drool sessions at B&H's web site. I'll be poking around the digital forums and reviews.

    Re: Welcome!!

    Howdy,

I'm new to the forum and just wanted to say hello. I was heavily ito photogrpahy in the 60's and 70's. Used 35mm (Pentax) and 4x5 (Calumet view) but my favorite film camera was the Mamiya TLR series. I shot mainly B&W for my own work, did my own processing and had a Besseler enlarger (forget the model) with Componon lenses. I left photography partially to pursue music (sitar) and partially because it was always a "hobby" but when I went into it commercially I lost my taste for it.

Fast forward to the end of 2008 and I was bitten by the photography bug again. My god! Digital is a whole new world. Very exciting. I tried a couple of cameras and ended up with a Nikon D90. Picked up the Sigma 10-20, Nikkor 50 1.8, Nikkor 24-85 2.8/4 (a GREAT walking around lens) and Nikkor 70-300 VR2 (sharper than I was expecting).

So I am still working/feeling my way through things. I'm using Corel Paintshop Pro Photo X2 (went though a lot of the various photo editors using the free trials and Photoshop I took to immediately. Very intuitive for me.)

I have tried a few other photography forums but was not very happy with them. I found this place and here I am. Been reading for some time and like the feel of this place. Seems friendly and down to earth.

Anyway - rambling on a bit so if you are still with me - Hello!

    Michael
