As well as answering this question generally, please calculate the following:

If you take a photograph using the cardinal aperture of f stop 11, at a shutter speed of a tenth of a second, what shutter speed would you need to achieve the same exposure using f stop 22 (for example, if you wanted greater depth of field)?

Being an evil old man, I'm not going to do your homework for you, but just help you get the answer.

    - The TTL indicator tells you how much light the sensor/film will receive at the current settings. Too much; too little or, if in the middle, just right. The three things that determine the amount of light in non-flash photography are: ISO, aperture and shutter speed. So how would you get the TTL meter to the middle?

    - The relative amount of light in photography is measured in 'stops'. An increase of one stop means twice as much light. A decrease of one stop means half as much light. How many stops is it when going from f/11 to f/22 and in which direction? What do you have to do to the shutter speed to compensate for that change?

    Hello...
please check out the wikipedia page on reciprocity. It essentially talks about EV (Exposure Equivalent) values and the amount of light available (non flash) in the scene. There is a lot of great information there, but the bottom line is that whenever you begin to use long exposure times then the rules for shutter speed, aperture, and film speed or ISO begin to break down. This can happen if you are using film or a light sensor. Hope that helps.

Hi TF, I shoot film and don't have an easy way yet to convert images to digital except via my scanner. I've uploaded 4 images and apologize they aren't any crisper but my scanner is a humble Canon MP80. If you have some suggestions for equipment/technique to convert my slides/prints I'd really appreciate that. There are some underwater shots I'd really like to share. I'd really appreciate any feedback/criticisms on the images and thank you for saying hello. kevin

    Kevin,

I thought, "What images?", but I see that they are in the Gallery. I'm afraid I seldom get in the Gallery. Loved seeing the seals - not something we see much of in Chicagoland.

I would suggest you post your film-to-digital questions in the Film Forum and pick one or two images you would like critiqued and post them on the (aptly named) Critique Forum.

    Again, welcome.

I wasn't sure where or how to upload them and stumbled on the Gallery area. How else could I have done it?

Click on the 'Upload Photos' button in the area below the text box (if you use the Quick Reply', you have to hit the 'Go Advanced' button belkow it).

Use the pop up box to locate the file(s) you want on your computer. Limit 5 per post, 800 pixels on it's longest side, max of 293KB and either jpg, gif or bmp.

Hit the 'Upload' button in the box. After uploading, close the pop up.

The images will appear below any text in your reply. Note that they will not show up with "Preview Post".

Thank you! to my 2 responses. I have followed your leads, and I have worked out I need to slow the shutter speed by 2 stops from 1/10 speed. The only thing which confuses me is that shutter speeds go in 1/15, 1/8 and 1/4 (halving as they go) So theoretically 1/10 leads me to 1/2.5 ... is that correct??

I should add, I'm not allowed to look at a camera to do this (this is cheating!) my exercise is to find the answer only using websites & forums!

That is correct. The camera will probably show that as 0.4" - TF

Hello, my name's Josh, I'm and Australian living in France and I do much photography in my spare time, but the rest of the time I'm a musician.
I have a Canon 1000D with a couple of kit lenses, I would love to upgrade this one day but this kind of gear is so expensive. I also have three Minolta Srt's, a 100, 101, & 303 and a whole bunch of lenses and stuff (this gear is way cheaper to collect!) it's a shame about the exorbitant film and developing prices but I guess it makes you think about each shot : )
I have a flickr for my digital stuff (and some analog stuff that hasn't been mangled by the scanner) flickr.com/joshuahyde
    Pleased to meet you.

    Welcome David, simbok, and paulm.
David we all were a bit confused on our first forum visits but as they go, this one has one of if not the best layout and usability. Just explore the different forums of interest.
One hint I have for all it to use the 'new posts' tool at the top, which will give you all the posts made since your last visit, in all forums.
Hope to see and hear more from all of you.

Good evening everyone! My name is Casandra and I am currently stationed in Minot, North Dakota. I have dabbled in some great settings while I have traveled the world with the Air Force but never had the money to invest in a great camera. I have recently purchased a Canon Rebel XSi with 18-55mm lens. I also purchased an additional 55-250mm lens as well as the Canon Rebel for Dummies book and a carrying bag for the equipment. I am getting ready to relocate to South Korea for a year and then off to Germany in March '11. I was stationed in Turkey for 20 months and the one thing I regret is just having a few snapshots with a point and shoot. I have been told I have a good eye, but I would like to know what you all think. I have enjoyed browsing through everyone's photos and reading critiques.

Howdy yall! My name is Chris, I'm from Raleigh, NC, but currently I live in Columbia, SC in grad school. I have always loved taking pictures of everything, and over the winter break I got a Nikon D3000 with an 18-55 and 55-200 lenses. I hope to be adding some great pictures soon once I learn how to set up the camera and all. Until then I have a couple pictures from my first few days with the camera.

    Re: Welcome!!

    Hi guys,

Recently found this excellent photoforum with nice people and interesting topics and pics and decided to register to share and learn. Must say I’m rather new to digital photo but not to photography (film) started with a Canon Pellix and worked my way up to F1n’s and Hasselblad’s but always as an amateur, ended having my dedicated color darkroom were I spent endless nights as one can imagine but risking my day work so finally gave up on that passion for a while.

Now I find myself on the late phase of life as semi retired and working my way up to digital photo, so bought a couple of point and shoot Panasonic FZ7 and FS7 and I have on my way an Oly E500 with a 14-45mm zoom – will see what develops.

My name is Antonio, mechanical engineer, born in Santiago, Chile and a Mexican citizen since 1972 living in Torreon, Mexico.

    Happy shooting
