    Hi

I'm FFPhotog, which stands for Fly Fishing Photographer, because Fly Fishing is another of my passions. I am actually returning to serious Photography after a bit of a hiatus. Until about 8 years ago I was serious amateur/semi pro, but I moved on to other things just as the digital revolution started in earnest. I joined this forum to get help with the digital differences. I still remember my fundamentals of how to manipulate light and composition. I've been playing with a Nikon D70 for a bit and with all the controls, its a wonder anyone gets good photos with such an array of options, half of which I predict I'll never use.

Anyway, the reason I joined this forum today is I need some advice on a good walking around lens for this D70. I bought just a body and have been using the 28-80 from my film body. While the 28 translates to about 42mm and the 80mm to 120mm, its not quite wide enough and the 3.5 to 5.6 is a bit limiting on the small sensor camera. I was thinking that the 24mm to 85mm f/3.5-4.5 might be quite a bit more useful, since I do flower closeups, landscapes and candid portraiture.

Also, while I was looking around at the list of used lenses at the chief retailers, I didn't see many fixed focus lenses. Have they kind of fallen out of favor? Back when I was a serious film photographer, fixed focus was where it was at if you needed poster quality prints. Are people trying to make up for this in the DX sensor cameras by using this Raw format I've been reading about?

First, welcome to PR! and then some comments that are not brand specific:

    - I would recommend posting in the Nikon forum for the specifics of the lenses and your application

    - I would drop the 'translation' thing and just know your current body.

    - There are still many prime lenses and they are used a lot, but you no longer need to avoid the zooms to get the quality. You will pay a little more for the convenience, but not lose the quality.

    - There is no need to make up for anything in the cropped sensor bodies. The only difference is the crop and the price.

    - RAW is like the film negative. It is what the camera captured. Anything else is processed from the RAW.

    Re: Welcome!!

    Hello everyone,

My name is Galen and I live in Portland, Oregon. I'm not a pro or anything like that but I've taken photography classes, have a few cameras and been shooting for many, many years. Recently, my photography has taken a huge jump in productivity. I've been shooting every chance I get. But, I have a dirty little secret... I used to use a Nikon D90 but now that's gone. I have a Soligor 66 and Minolta srt 101 with some fun lenses but really, what I use more then anything is... My iPhone.... There, I said it. Feel better getting that off my chest. :-) Yes, I'm sure it's shameful but I absolutely love the photos that come out of it.

Anyway, you can have a look at my Flickr page if you'd like. I'll be uploading aother big batch some time soon:

Hmmm... Aparently I can't even post a link to my Flickr page...

    Thanks!

    Re: Welcome!!

Weird... I just realized that the forum posts are backwards... page one has the last post instead of the first post. This is a weird forum guys. I don't mean to be disrespectful. It's just that things are a little strange here. For instance, how am I supposed to post my work if I can't start a thread or even post a link to my work on Flickr? Okay, so say I go to some other thread and try to post something there? Nope, can't post there because you can't post links... Again, no disrespect meant it's just a little frustrating coming here for the first time and hitting so any restrictions.

    Welcome to PR!

I don't know what you mean by the pages - my last page has (nearly) the last postings. There are a couple that are always at the end because of earlier problems with Spammers. And spam is the reason for the 'need 10 posts' requirement before you can post a link. Many of them give up before 10.

    Thanks Terry! You're awesome!

About the page order thing: It's no big deal but usually, when I go to forums, page one ( in the upper right corner you'll see a little "<<1 2 3 >> Last" or something like that) usually has post one and the further down you look on the page, the numbers increase. Here, when I look at threads, page one of the thread has the last posting in the thread first. So in this case, post 741 appears at the top of page 1. This is backwards to me. Maybe there's just some setting that I need to find. :-)

Aaaaand.... I found it! It was just a setting in the user control panel. defaults to "Linear - newest first". Funny.

That may be a setting??? I have noticed today that I cannot get past page 19 though. - Terry

    Hello,
Looking to purchase a beginner photo studio (backdrop, lights, etc..) for my sister who just had twins. She would love to take her own pictures. Any ideas on a good beginner setup? Was looking online but I really have no idea what I am looking for. Strobe light, continuous light? Thank you for any help.

    Hello,

I'm new to the forum and an odd thing is happening.

I see the following notice at the top of the forum:

    Hello Justan,
Our records indicate that you have never posted to our site before! Why not make your first post today by saying hello to our community in our ViewFinder forum.

I tried to post in the ViewFinder Forum only to receive the following notice:
To create new threads in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater.

    You currently have 0 posts.

Worse, according to other notices I'm not permitted to view any images until I've posted 10 or more times. It’s odd to not be able to see photographs on a site devoted to photography and it makes it difficult to post something related to the images when they can’t be seen.

Seems like new members aren’t particularly wanted.

Any suggestions to remedy this odd problem?

Welcome to PR. The ten post rule came about because of all the spam we were getting. I was unaware you couldnt see any images though. PM Photo John I am sure he will help you.
