    Is water wet?

Or does it merely makes other things wet?

You wouldn't believe how much time we wasted arguing about that through high school...

    Re: Is water wet?

    Neither. It's a feeling.
Soak something in alcohol. It feels wet
Soak something in ammonia. Wet again.
What is opposite of wet? dry right?
So wine that is defined as "dry" is not wet? Try soaking something in some "dry" wine. Does it feel wet?

Ah, another age-old question. Steve, nice point about the Star Wars thing, but remember, they would've invented sound in space by then

Hmmm. Interesting question. But while we're at it, ask you old high school buddies "How high is up?" Hehehe.

Esoteric philosophy aside, I like this photo. So what is it and how did you take it?

Aha! You've inadvertantly answered you're own question!

"A Long Time Ago". We all know space is expanding, and space is not a total vacuum (though it beats what we can make here on earth). If space is expanding, and there is gas, dust, etc., out there, then "a long time ago" the gas, dust, etc would have been much more dense, and as such, may have been able to transmit sound waves!

Your second point, "In A Galaxy Far, Far Away" reminds us that the universe is not uniform. For instance, while light travels at 186282.3959 miles per second in most of the universe, there is one region of space where light travels at approximately 150,000 miles per second. Scientists have yet to explain that. In a galaxy far, far away, sound may travel through space due to a different set of physics than what we experience here.

    Re: Is water wet?

Let's ask a really tough question while we're at it. Where did matter come from. Whether you believe in creation or the big bang, the question is the same. This is one that scientists won't even touch because no one has a theory. Does that mean that this is the point at which creation is the only answer.

If light travels at 186,282.3959 miles per second (in round numbers), then what is the speed of dark?!

    Mike

It's an old question, with old "I don't know's" for answers.

First there was a primodial atom.
    Where did it come from?
    We don't know.
(Originally scientists thought it exploded, then over billions of years, it contracted and started all over again. Essentially, it had always been here and always would be. Now we know that the universe is expanding and will not contract again. Oops. BTW, I've been studying astronomy since I was 12 - I'm now 43)

    Then it exploded.
    Why did it explode?
    We don't know.

Then all the matter from this explosion began to come together and form stars and planets.
    What made it come together?
    We don't know....
    You get the idea.

And while we're making fun of physics (OK, I've had fun with it), the Second Law of Thermodynamics tells us that "all things tend toward a state of entropy." Entropy means disorder, decay. How does an explosion form stars and planets? Now THAT takes faith! ;-)

Finally, allow me to play devils advocate with a simple example. Yes, I am enjoying myself here...;-) The Boeing 747 jumbo jet has over 4 million parts to it. If you put all those parts in a pile and blew them up, how many explosions (how many tries) would it take to form a fully assembled 747? :-O

Everyone here knows I'm a smart alect, right? If you didn't know it before, you do now. ;-)

Trivia for the day. The nature of matter in the universe is as follows: 77 percent dark energy (the nature of which is still an unsolved mystery), 19 percent nonbaryonic dark matter (likely consisting of unidentified particles), and 4 percent baryonic matter (atoms and other types of familiar matter). Which means that only 4 percent of the universe we live in can be seen and/or detected with our eyes and instruments. Amazing, isn't it?

    I do love Sebastians posts...

    So thought provoking...

    So much fun!

    :-)

with no atmosphere in space, would all those battle scenes contain explosions, or would they just be little fizzles?
