Social Distortion - Live Photos

I was assigned to shoot this show at Houston's House of Blues on Friday, November 19, 2010.

There were a total of 5 photographers in the pit along with 3 house security guards and 2 band security guards, so the pit was crowded, but between the raucous fans, extra security and my fellow shooters, I managed to get the job done.

Equipment for this show:

• Canon 5D
• Canon 5D Mark II
• Sigma 28-75mm f/2.8
• Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0
• Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8

and as usual we shot three songs and no flash.

Those are ggreat photos and that's a sweet photo assignment! Was it the usual 2- 3 songs and then the photographers get shuffled out gig or did you get to shoot the whole show?

Social Distortion was the first band I ever saw. It was probably 1982, at the On Broadway, in San Francisco. Things sure have changed since then. I'm sure no one in that band expected to ever play mainstream clubs or even live till 2010. Mike Ness was skin and bones with tons of eyeliner and a black beret. Crazy how things change

Yes, the usual 3 songs and no flash rule definitely applied.

The scary part is that I was initially told this was going to be a soundboard shoot. No joy in that, but about an hour before Social Distortion was to go on, we were informed otherwise, the pit it was!

Mike Ness has recently dropped the eyeliner as one of the photographers we shot with lamented that he wasn't going to be able to shoot him with it.

I completely remember Social Distortion when they started out, especially from watching the early 80's documentary, Another State of Mind, where Social Distortion and Youth Brigade went out on an ill-fated DIY tour.

You've been around for a while, huh? The "Someone Got Their head Kicked In" comp is one of my favorites, ever. It's also got my favorite Social Distortion recordings. You might appreciate this, too - the only vinyl I still own is Legal Weapon's "Your Weapon."
