Recommended Books?

Hi there,

Are there any books that are recommneded to learn about digital photography and using Photoshop to enhance it?

I understand that one book can't cover everything. But something like a book full of Trevor's black and white conversion tutorials would be very helpful I think.

I guess I'm looking for 2 diffrent types of books:

-Basic photography techniques
-Using photoshop to enhance pictures (a book of tutorials?)

Are there any books out there like that?

[Edit] Did a bit of looking and I think this books looks good. It's called The Adobe Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter). Only problem is I have PS7 and that book is written for PS:CS. Would a lot of the stuff in there still apply to PS7 or will I be missing a lot of stuff?

The book that you mention is the one I'd go with - Scott Kelby is the author? There is a 7.0 version out but I'm sure no longer in print, you could probably find it on ebay, half.com, etc.

For basic photo techniques, Kodak has some good ones. National Geographic's field guide to photography is good too.

I subscribe to the Adobe Photoshop focus guide which comes with CDs each month and very detailed lessons on every tool available - it also covers Adobe Elements and CS!

Not only can you find it on Amazon etc., you can likely find it at your local public library. I'm #1 on the reserve list at the public library in my town. This edition covers Photoshop 7.

For basic stuff, I second the Kodak and Nat'l Geo books, but also check out anything by John Hedgecoe. I'm not sure what he's written lately, but he'll have something out there for certain, lol. He's pretty prolific with these guidebooks.

I bought How To Use Adobe Photoshop 7, by Daniel Giordan, to help me figure out all the features in PS 7. However it's more like a basic manual than something for the advanced PS user.

I have the book you mentioned. It's written by Martin Evening, comes with a handy, dandy tutorial cd as well. It will apply to many (90%+) of the functions of PS6 and 7. PS hasn't really changed that much from version to version.

That's actually a different book by the same name. Scott Kelby's book is published by Voices That Matter; Martin Evening's book is published by Focal Press. This one (Martin Evening's) book is a little more in depth for the "why" questions, and not a tutorial. I just got it to try to learn more about how and why things are done. It's more of the classroom-in-a-book type.

But it's a really good book. I've been reading it page to page during my week off when my kids let me. I really want to learn all the ins and outs of Photoshop so I won't have to pay for automated actions on Fred Miranda's site, and more expensive plug-ins that are readily available online. Maybe I might even sell some of my own-not.
