This LOOKS like a house sparrow, so LOCATION would be the key to the ID Where was this shot(habitat) because pre second molt sparrows are brab looking at times too. It is pretty late for that plumage, but some birds do rarely have a second clutch very late

BTW... The best place in Maine to find moose is on the highway when you leaving I was in Maine for 5 days a while back and the only one I have ever seen was at 85 MPH while leaving Maine ;)

From the local fish markets - cropped and sharpened lightly. Even so, they look a little bit unreal to me, but that is how they have come out of the camera.
N.B. I realise the post is distracting, but haven't had time to remove it.

Is it that hard to believe that a male HOUSE FINCH would stay within it's race
Dude that finch is a breeding plumage MALE house finch(no RED in those WHITE wingbars) Believe me.... you will KNOW when you see a purple finch, they look deeper in color and have tons of it . I will give you that some house finches are deeper in color making them APPEAR to the untrained eye to be a purple finch ;)
HABITAT and location is a key factor too

I found that goose in your neck of the woods.......
At Six Flags Safari in Jersey.
And the only moose I did see was on the warning signs.....
But I tried!!!!

I just don't have your skill Paul.
I hope to someday, but I still get confused by stupid things like that. I have the same problem with dragonflies. Some guy on a Canon forum just told me to rename 3 of my dragons.

Can you indentify nests??? My granddaughter and I were cruising through this canyon with steep straight up sides and looking at swallow nests on the rock overhangs. We both spotted this and we know there is no water up there...Reno is really dry right now. Kind of gross if you think about it, but interesting at the same time. Around the bend of this canyon is a small lake and a dam.....and fish. I have my hunch of what it might be, but wanted another opinion. Our guess is an eagle, but what kind, I don't know. We don't know what else would build on a cliff like that. She just started with the bird watching group at her school and is really into watching birds....and getting into photography. This was zoomed in with a 70-200mm lens. If you want to look at the full size picture, I'll send it to you. You can definately tell what rocks they like to sit on. Next time I'm taking a telescope.
Great horned owls, falcons, vultures, CALIFORNIA CONDORS and maybe Golden eagles(though bald is a possiblity if water is within a few miles) will nest on cliffs.
This looks like it could also just be a ROOST were vultures waste the day away... pun intended ;)
Too bad Reno is THOUSANDS of miles away, because I am crazy enough to climb up there and get to the bottom of this mystery ! I found a swift colony in Sedona and FREE CLIMBED up 100's of feet to see them with 3 cameras, 2 sets of binos, a tripod and 4 lenses on my back ...
ONLY the last 40 was actually straight up. Getting up there was a over an hour climb, getting down was a 10 minute shutes and ladders ride

Thank you for the information, I'll pass it on to my grandaugther. The cliffs over look the river and a large beaver dam, which is only about 1/2 mile from the dam and lake. We did spot a pair of hawks flying down the through the canyon and a couple of vulchers over head. This area is a short drive north, so I know I'll be out there again.
'specially since I've posted it before awhile back.
