It doesnt work at greater distance outdoors. It must have worked here because it was close to two white walls and the celiing. The checkerboarding I can only guess Are pixels that arent charged at the time of the flash.
I can imagine that soon there will be shutterless cameras that sync at all speeds that work by sending a timed charge to the sensor.
