Black and White techniques in CS?

I am trying to do some BW pics in CS, but not sure how to do it. Desaturating it all the way is one way I've tried, I've also gone into the channel mixer and monochromed it, then adjusted the sliders. But other than that, I am still pretty clumsy at getting a good BW

What do some of you do? I am open to idea and would love to try things, thanks

All I did was go to Image, Mode, then Grayscale. I am a newbie to PS, so this is as far as I have gotten. Good luck!

    Digital Imaging Forum...

This topic is dealt with in detail there. BTW, grayscale and desaturating are two of the least effective methods of converting a color pic to b&w...
