Ribbons of Gold

In my 'other' spare time, I've been doing some woodwork for our boat. The project I'm working on is a solid teak hatch to replace the original teak/plywood version. I was playing around with the camera as I was finishing up doing some planing the other afternoon, and grabbed this shot. (yes, I still use a hand-plane ;) )
Shot with Fuji Reala, handheld at 1/10 sec, f/3.5.

I know it's a little soft overall. Does this work to my advantage on this one??

Very interesting subject matter, and well composed. However, the softness doesn't work for me very well. It would have been much better if everything had been properly focused, particularly the knob and the nameplate. I love the idea behind this, though.

Hi Chris,

A very nice image. However, I agree with Fadder on this and go for a sharp focus. It's a sharp tool, eh? I would try it with a high DOF to get the front edge, wood-chips, and blade all in focus. Also, the shot seems to have some yellow cast to it. This may have been your intent though.

I agree about the focus, specially in the knob area. But I'd to say that I really like the colours here. I love the autumn/fall pastel like tones. From the dark red to green, brown all very nice.

I think you're all right about the focus. I was hand-holding with existing light at 1/10sec wide open, so any slower would have been just plain blurry
I think i'll try this shot again tomorrow with the tripod and some different DOF's. (unfortunately that means it'll be a few week's 'til I get them developed).

Leels, thanks for the comments on the colors... that was exactly the effect that I was trying for. The mid-afternoon sun was coming right into the shed and reflecting off of the raw pine walls and teak dust in the air, so the result was clearly a yellowish cast.
