    Gold and Green: a pear-xpost

I wish (someone mentioned this to me by email) that the neck of the pear was a bit more over the rim of the glass bowl in the last (and well I'll have to wait till I go grocery shopping again) but all opinions and ideas welcome. I cropped them to a square to bring attention to the curves...thnaks in advanced for looking and I've added two others taht could stand being more in focus...I had wanted to try and do it as a series...does the concept work?

    Natalie,

As a fruit, I love the pear! As a series, I think it has potential. I like the 1st and 3rd ones the best. The 2nd one seems a bit "ordinary" to me, though in a diverse series that kind of a photo may have a place. Also, on the 2nd one, I find the DOF to be a bit too shallow... a bit deeper and more of the pear would be in focus with the table still out of focus. What is more interesting about the 1st and 3rd to me is that the curves are interesting. I especially like the 1st in that regard. (the thought just occurred to me - what would the 1st one look like if you had let the pear sit for an hour so the fruit part got a little oxidized? hmmm...) I agree with your assessment of the 3rd one - a bit more "neck" out of the bowl and it would work better.

My suggestion in all three is that the background is too brown for the brown pear, IMHO. Maybe a brighter background that adds to the flavor (no pun intended) but doesn't detract from the subject would work better? Like a medium shade of red, or maybe a medium green.

Very creative!! And I hope you will show us more of this series as it comes together for you...

    Cheers, Stew

I like the monochromatic feel. It allows the abstract curves and shapes to be more the object of the photos in much the same way as B&W.

More dof would help in the smaller 2. I really like the texture that is there.

Very nice composition. After doing one square painting, I went around composing photos in the square format for a while just to see how different it feels. It was fun but I don't think I ever got my eye trained to see it that way automatically.

I had almost forgotten that I didn't post and tell you how much I liked these pictures. *smile* I guess I thought that I liked them and then got distracted before I could reply properly. I think these work rather well, I liked the last one, when you posted it over in viewfinder and I like the three of them together very much as well. While I think the first and last could proably stand alone, I think the middle one needs to be part of a series. I think you've done a good job with them, considering that it seemed to be an unplanned photo. I was going to suggest adding a bit more color, but I like the subtle tones; it adds to the photo.

The third one is quite interesting IMO. It's a nice study in shape and line, as well as having a composition that keeps visual interest more than most shots of the same genre. I wonder if you were to get a little closer / lower and do B&W if it would have a sort of "Weston-like" look to it?
