    Play with your food!

Influenced by both Seb's High Key Experiment and a trip to the Farmer's Market today, I decided to try something new for me - photograph food. Highlights are blown in the second one but had to do that to get the white paper background blown out. Got to think about how to light it with strobes, maybe that would help. These are all just window light. Any comments appreciated. I'm going to eat my subjects now, how often do you get to do that?

    ...

I'm LOVIN' the first one! I love the white on the white - and the DoF is excellent. It really makes me want to eat a blackberry. I don't think it's fair you didn't share!

    Hello another view,

Both shots are totally compelling! They have a studio quality feel to them. I am surprised to see that you could control natural light that well (I am definately not there yet!!).

I really enjoy the way the bowl almost blend in the background on the first one and I like the shadows on the second one.

I never tried to eat my subject, nor do I think that it would a good move.

2 great shots. I just have to say ' what are those things in pic #2 ? ' That first shot would go great in my kitchen and I love all the white. So fresh and clean and uptown looking. What time of day was it? The light is great.

Another View might be able to provide you with a more accurate answer but the vegetables in the second picture are a variety of marrow. They are mostly used for decoration purpose in Halloween. I am surprised to see that these are already available in a market. They usually are available in late september/early october.

Thanks Seb, I was going to say they don't look too tasty.

Actually they're Pattypan (sp?) Squash. They taste about like any other squash but just look kind of interesting. Hard to find so I thought they'd be a good dual-purpose purchase (for a whole dollar, no less!). I usually just saute them with olive oil and a little s&p.

Thanks for all the comments. I see a few things that I don't like - for example the color of the white dish isn't the same shade as the background but I think that would be very difficult to do - but the results would be even better. I shot these shortly before posting them yesterday in my "studio". I set a piece of white paper (24x30 or so) on my desk, arched it up for a background and had window light coming in from the right, middle of the day. That's it! Shot in RAW mode.

The shallow DOF works well with these shots. They are both very nicely done. I would have suggested adding a little contrast to the squash but I worry about the hot spots getting blown out...maybe a levels or curves adjustment would do the trick.

    Both well done...

Both are very well done an effort to be proud of. I like alot about both images, however I would go with two as my favorite. If one had ashade more DOF I feel it would be a more compelling image. Great job with a difficult subject. Very good manipulation of natural light.

See, there's that DOF I need to work on! Nice presentation Steve. Are those little thingys in the second shot a fruit or a vegetable? I would like to have seen them with something else in the shot for size comparison.
