    African sunset

Another one from my african safari. Do the two trees work, or does it create to much symetery?

I like the look and feel of the photo. One tree may be better as it will not distract from the sunset. the tree on the right is lined up with one of the clouds.

    Re: African sunset

I tried cropping experiments - none that I'll post. What kind of crop do you think works best?

The photo would look great with both trees if there was one more silhouette - not neccessarily a tree.

If there had been a building, a man, a pair of people or a giraffe, the photo could work quite well.

The sunset is so nice, it's hard to determine where a piece should be removed from.

    Great sunset.

A beautiful sky and just the right amount of foreground. But yes, the two trees are taking away from eachother. Although I dislike having to crop a picture by more than just a trim, a vertical scene with only the tree on the left makes a very appealing image. I did not see the other images from your safari . .I will surely take a look.

I think I almost like this one more than the “fixed” version. The ground again appears uneven to me and this is my only real criticism of it. The colors might look a bit better with more red but this is very nice also.

It would be a shame to lose either half of this great shot, but I agree that the single shot with both trees somehow doesn't quite work. How about a diptych or a single mat with openings for both halves? I'm sure someone can come up with better matting proportions than this, but I think you get the idea.
    or...
...maybe a mat with three openings with some other appropriate photo between these two "bookends"?

    Re: African sunset

I think this is a great shot. The trees don't ruin it for me, in fact I've seen the "one tree in front of the savanah sunset" picture too many times. This is a new take on that for me.

The things that bother me are: the angle - I feel that the horizon should be straight - and the top of the tree on the right lining up with the clouds is distracting to me. That may have been avoided by waiting for the clouds to move - or maybe not! Either way, I find it to be a striking image. One that should be framed.

I also liked Chunk's crop on the left.

Wow, I really love your shot! I can't wait to go to southern Africa this summer! I think the symmetry is fine, because somehow it works! I am a fan of big skies, and I like that in yours, along with the great colours. Well done!

With colors as nice as this photo, it really doesn't matter how you crop it. I prefer the original. It better portraits the vastness of the safari. Great job!

I like this a lot. Sense of timelessness in this that reflects the nature of Africa. The trees are there, so they must stay in the pic.

I like Chunk's idea, too. It's too good a shot to lose anything from, but, the symetry is a bit too close for me. Chunk's mult-part matting may just be the answer.

Great idea , Chunk. i like where your going with this. keeps both trees and somehow just seperating them as two pics gives them each the benefit of theirt own stardom. I like the idea.

That's a good way of stating the idea Gary. I was hoping someone with a better sense of design than I would suggest a better sizing/proportioning and placing of the images within the mat - it seems a bit awkward to me the way I placed them but I don't know exactly why.
Bahaji, I hope this side discussion doesn't detract from your thread here.

    Awesome input by all. Thankyou.

I didn't expect to get this kind of input from this photo. But the exchanges have aided in me thinking of many ideas I can use on other photos.

Lets end this thread. Thank you all once again. shane

I love the photo, and really like Chunk's idea for splitting the original. I'd frame them separately and hang them next to each other as a pair. How amazing must it have been to be there in person to get this shot?
