    Re: "As Is" Shot

HMMMMMM.. Hawk definately! habitat is that of an accipter or red-shouldered hawk.

The tail makes me think RED-SHOULDERED hawk from the amount of white at the tip ;)

Crop that baby down and let's see if I am right

I still say redshouldered hawk, but the dark head is very odd!

It has the red streaking on the chest, thick white band on the tip of the tail, white wing bars..

I can't get any detail in the head, but the darkness makes it look like somebody put a peregrine falcon's head on a red-shouldered hawk's body

I figured this was the same Cooper's Hawk I've seen around here lately (and posted a while back on this thread.) He was chasing another bird right before he landed and I took his photo with a realtively short lens. Here it is cropped 100% and then resized upward another 200%.

I'd like to play! :-) I took these guys in Honduras but I have no idea if they are native to the country.

Yeah it is a cooper's hawk indeed, though you should have more migrant sharp shinned hawks coming from NJ up. Between NJ and you has alot of coopers though ;)

The appearance of wing barring made me think it was a oddly lit RS though.

Here is a link to ONE of the pair of hawkwatchs I go to.

    http://hawkcount.org/day_summary.php...r=2005&rday=23

That is one day broken down by hour. You can find the daily counts of alot of watches there BTW.

Duluth, Minnesota is the place to be to see hawks migrate in the US in my opinion ;)

Re: Cropped and lightened a little...

Thanks for the link. You reminded me of something I heard recently when my company brought in a guest speaker at a training session. The woman mentioned a preserve in Wisconsin where something like 10,000 geese stop when migrating and hundreds of bird watchers go to observe. I don't remember where it was -- perhaps you know. Anyway, she went out of her way to say she couldn't imagine who on earth woul have so little going on in their lives that they would do to something like that.

    She was a dumb@*#(.

Re: Cropped and lightened a little...

10,000 is actually a tiny number when it comes to wintering geese ;)

100,000- 200,000 stop at Horicon Marsh in wisconsin every winter

A MILLION plus fly down the mississippi river every year from canada !

The reason people would be there is to find ODD geese(ross's, blue morph snow, white fronted.....), other waterfowl, cranes and shorebirds! Not to look at the lawn crew per say ;) When did a BIRDING stop being a GOOD hobby... because MILLIONS of US citizens do it!

I would like to add that bowling, watching car races and golf are not on my list of things to do.... But I wouldn't knock a person who like to do it ;)

BTW... I have played golf a few times, I have bowled in the 200's and I have raced a few guys on the highway too! hahaha

I was going through some pictures from earlier this year and came across this one. Is this a birds nest or is this guy just looking for some food?

I play golf when I can and would bring my camera if the other players would let me get away with it. You really get to see some wildlife -- I've seen hawks land on the greens, I've seen lots of snakes and the occasional alligator around the water hazards, I've seen lots of rabbits out west and big iguanas on a course in Puerto Rico. I've even seen a great blue heron peck through a turtle's shell and eat 'em on the golf course. The pecking sounded like a rifle shot. I even had a pair of foxes grab my ball once.

Well, at least it wasn't the gator getting your ball... think if I golfed, and I went with you, I'd take a shotgun instead of my camera

Mike... Ya know I was going to post a blue-grey gnatcatcher SITTING in the nest a few days ago, but I can't find my powercord for my external HD(I am a messy guy)

That is indeed a nest !

For those that don't know, Mike has located a nest that is rediculously tiny and only visible for a few weeks before the tree get heavy leave(usually). They are usually in OAK trees because they have dense foliage and the nest matches the branch and actally looks like a knot on the limb

A blue-grey knatcather is much smaller than a sparrow and when on the nest the head sticks out one side and the tail the other side! TINY bird, very tiny nest!
