Only problem I see with posting these list of links is it interfers with the advertising that is purposefully done to generate income to the website owners to help pay the ongoing costs and keep these forums free to all the current community people. I would suggest you check with Photo-John about this posting and if you are going to post again like this then definately check with him before you do.

    It's fine

I just have to check and see what I should add to our permanent, Directories, section.

And I've also moved it to the ViewFinder Forum as I think that's a better fit for the list.

Personally, I think it would have been better to...

...post a SINGLE link to your own web page with all the other links listed, but we certainly appreciate the time and effort you took to research and list these sites.

    Magazine suggestions?

I'm thinking about getting a magazine subscription, but there are so many choices out there.... I have only ever read one photo mag before and that was an issue of Popular Photography that I picked up in Colorado a few years ago. I really liked it, but I'm not so sure it is the best mag. out there to learn and develope my photo knowladge and skills from. Don't get me wrong, I love this site and I have learned a ton in the very short time that I have been here, and I plan on sticking around a long time, but I can't take it with me everywhere I go. ;) I found a huge list of magazines on this site, but who has the time to go thru 100 links to find the one that fits what I"m looking for? Ok, so here's a little info about me and what I'm looking for and if anyone out there has any suggestions about a good mag. to help me out, it would be greatly appreciated. I just made the switch from fill to digital about a month ago. My new camera is a DRebel, and I really want to develope some good techniques for taking great photos, as well as learning the ins and outs of the DRebel itself. I also want to learn more about digital imaging and editing with PS and how to turn good photos into great photos. I'm sure there are tons of magazines out there that will fit the bill but I'm looking for some opinions on what you are reading. Mags you love, and mags that you wouldn't suggest. Any and all help is always appriciated.

    Thanks in advance!!!

My favorite...for a good, all-purpose magazine for amateurs, enthusiasts, pros, is the British mag, Practiacal Photography. It's expensive, can't be found everywhere, but is the best quality that I've found. Their reviews of equipment are very good, and as far as I can tell, unbiased. My opinion. :-)

A friend got me a subscription to Popular Photography for Christmas last year. Unfortunately, it went to her house instead of mine, so when she came (lives states away) she brought a huge bag of them. So I've been going thru them one at a time. While there is some good info, I'd never subscribe to this one on my own. Half the mag is ads and dealer listings, and the other half occasionally has info I'm interested in, but not enough to justify getting it.

But it was a very thoughtful gift, and I am enjoying it.

I learned a lot from photography magazines including PopPhoto, especially in the early years. The dealer listings are good especially if you are say....buying photo equipment.
They allow you to compare prices easily.

Same opinion here. Practical Photography combines good product information with easy-to-follow tutorials. Problem indeed that you can't buy it at every bookstore here in Holland and when you do, it's not really cheap. Still, I think the practical usability is worth the money.

Michael, I would also agree with this assessment. It is not cheap, in fact, I finally took out a subscription, as the subsciption price is about two-thirds of what I have pay for it in my local book store. and I am always sure to get a copy.

It has a "sister" magazine - Digital Photo - which has articles on doing things in Photoshop (both CS5 and Elements) every month, as well as equipment reviews and other "how-tos". The equipment reviews never seem to overlap or repeat the ones in Practical Photography, which is nice. The only downside, of course, is that everything is metric (only downside for non-metric countries) and costs are always in British £s (downside for a lot of us overseas) Digital Photo also comes with a CD each month which is packed with software to try (15-30 day trial period for most) as well as lessons in Photoshop that add to the material given in the magazine. These include trial images for you to try out the tutorials. Every few months, it has a small extra "magazine" that covers special aspects of Photoshop with tutorials on the CD in the magazine. I have learned a lot, both about Photoshop and photography, from the two of these magazines.

I also subscribe to a couple of outdoor photography magazines, because that is where my main interest is - Outdoor Photographer from the US and Outdoor Photography Canada for obvious reasons. Most of my other photography "info", I get from forums such as these and other sites on the web - it is an incredible wealth of knowledge and insight.

    Cheers,

    WesternGuy

    Re: List Of Photography Websites

I cannot speak for the other sections but as far as the DEALERS LIST there are some real bad dealers on that list that are bait and switch companies that I would stay as far away from as possible. Coming up with a list of dealers is fairly simple but posting a list that has dealers on it that are worth dealing with takes much more time and research. Before using any of the dealers listed in this post you may want to check out this thread of Recommended Dealers and dealers to avoid.

Recommended sites and sites to avoid

Broadway is on the list and probably has the worst reputation of any dealer on the net. There are also others on the list that need to be avoided, Jeff
