Talking A Fellow Photographer Made My Day

My turn for a Walterick style rambling...

Checked my email this morning, and I received one from a fellow photographer, who has been sort of mentoring me lately. We met in the photography section at Books-A-Million, and began emailing back and forth. Dawn and I met with him and his wife for dinner one evening, and discussed photography in general, and the business aspect of it in particular. (He is a pro wedding/portrait photographer.)

Several weeks ago, he asked me to assist him with a wedding. He was shooting his pastor's daughter's wedding. Seems she wanted black and white as well as color shots. I jumped at the chance to see him in action, and get an idea of his style. (This was my first time shooting black and white, which did cause me a minor amount of apprehension. But I trust my N80, and it came through for me!)

He did bridal shots before the wedding with his Mamiya 645, plus a few with his F100, and he had me take a few with the black and white. Then we set up and shot the wedding. I ended up shooting two rolls of black and white, and one roll of color. Very informative, and we discovered that we have very similar styles. Dawn and I met him and his wife two weeks later, and he showed me the photo's from the wedding. I was relieved that I hadn't blown mine!

    So back to this morning...

I checked my email, and this was his fourth paragraph:

"I will have to break the news to you about your black and white
photo's of the bride. The mom wants one of them enlarged to hang on
her wall, Probably a 16 x 20. There is a posibility that we will have
it tinted. She was really carried away with your photo of Sheila. I
thought it was a super choice."

So a heartfelt "Thank You" to all my PR family out there for your critiques, and support, and helping me learn and grow as a photographer. Looks like it is finally paying off. (I know, in three years I SHOULD learn something! OK, so maybe I'm slow as well as old!)

Pat yourselves on the back for a job well done!!!

Nice job! I agree, it's amazing where the most random encounters can take you. And you're not even through with it yet!

Indeed it is! I must admit that I was stunned, surprised, elated, and gratified.

I am also happy to report that I can still get through doorways, so apparently my head didn't swell too badly. ;-)

If I could, I would. I'll have to talk to Charles about it, and see if he has is scanned. I haven't even seen which one she picked! But never fear, we have tentative plans to have dinner with them on the 18th. I WILL find out which photo it was.

Remember, I was assisting him. His client (even if he did agree to do this one for free), his film, his lab, my humble assistance. If he has it scanned, I'll see if he'll email it to me so I can share it with you guys.

Thanks for the comments my friend!

Yes, it is amazing the way things work out. Most pro photographers I've met won't even think about sharing information with you, let alone help you in any way. Others are downright snooty (or snotty, depending on where you're from) about even talking to you, like you are beneath them. Personally, I think most of them are very insecure about themselves and their abilities, and are scared that you will take part of their market share away from them. Tsk, tsk. I'll try not to lose any sleep over it. ;-)

Thanks for the comments buddy. Now get some sleep - it's going to be in short supply for a while! :-)

    Now that's high praise indeed!

Yes, I'm feeling pretty good about it, now that I'm over the shock. I'm dying to see which pose they choose. Hopefully I'll be able to get a scan of it to share.

    Thanks for the comments buddy.

For those that asked to see the photo. The bride's mother still has the photo, and Charles has not scanned the image into his computer. We'll see if we can rectify that situation soon. If so, I'll be sure to post it for everyone.
