    High School Football

I had my first opportunity to shoot high school football this past friday. What an experience, and I'm so sore it's not even funny.

Thanks - I used my Sigma 70-200 2.8 for the entire game.

Thanks Andy. I had a hunch you might have used a lens in the 70-200 range for those shots. I might be looking at the Sigma as a backup lens as well for my 70-200 f2.8L IS that is now packed up with copies of the warranty card, purchase receipt, Canon FSC Repair Form (filled out and tear stained), and will be shipping overnight priority tomorrow via Fed Ex (sorry UPS fans-I've had way more bashed boxes from UPS than Fed Ex).

Same lens I use AC, great lens, and a whole lot cheaper than it's canon cousin.
I am in the process though of getting a Canon 28-300mm f3.5 IS USM. Partly because I will then have to carry only one lens for everything sports wise. I'll have to keep the Sigma for certain gyms as they are too dark and certain things the IHSAA will not allow flash for.

Great football shots, AC. You did a wonderful job.

One little nitpick on the final shot. It looks like it is crooked because the fence in the background isn't straight.

Andy you are a man of many talents. Great football images here. Looks like you had some pretty good conditions to shoot under or it may have just been you did a great job with poor light. At any rate please share you shooting conditions and camera settings. As always an excellent post process, did you do any thing different here. Hope I haven't ask for any trade secrets but I hope you don't mind sharing this information. I wish that my effort were nearly as sucessfull. Thanks for posting these.

    Re: High School Football

Thanks, OT - let me try to answer some of your questions.

Conditions - 7:30pm kickoff - it was 88-degrees and clear - the sun set about 3/4 into the first quarter of the game.

Settings: - Canon 10d - Sigma 70-200 f2.8 mounted on a monopod, with a 550ex attached directly to camera (no bracket). Before the sun set, I was shooting ISO 400, then 800, at f4 at 1/250th with a manual fill flash set at 1/16 of power. After sunset, I was shooting ISO 1600 at f2.8 at 1/180th to 1/250th with manual fill flash set at 1/4 to 1/8 of power depending on where we were on the field (it fell off at either end zone).

Post-Processing in Photoshop CS: These are sharpened to 50/.5/0 with unsharp mask. The colors were tweaked - usually +10 in with Hue/Saturation. I adjusted Levels to give the best overall look and white balance for each individual image, and finally, I did some burning around the edges to enhance each image - this, of course, is personal preference and something that I do as my "style" of sports photographs.

And OT, no trade secrets here - I'm happy to share anything that might help someone learn or try something new.

Thanks Andy. You have used very much the same technique that I used most of last year, but yours are with much better results. Your post process did include hue and saturation adjustment that I don't use along with the outer edge adjustments. Your images do always have your stamp on them, always very vibrant and alive. I like them very much. Thanks for sharing and keep posting these terrific photos.
