Have to get a digital camera!

    Hi,
I recently went on a long awaited trip (27 yrs), to Punta Cana. Unfortunately I don't own a digital camera. I have been looking but to tell you honestly I can't afford one yet, and my airmiles isn't offering me anything I want. I took my trusty old point and shoot, which always took great pics. I purchased the new Kodak High Definition film and off I went. I should of re-introduced myself to my camera before I went down. ( I don't take many pics anymore). Well, I was totally disappointed in my pics, I don't know if it was the film or the age of my camera, or Blacks Camera store. It looked grainy, I don't know how else to describe it. I still have one role of film in the camera, and I'm going to have someone else develop it, than I can compare. What's so disappointing is the waste, and not what I visualized. One pic I was really hoping for was the full moon shining through the palm trees and reflecting off the pool, it was a total blur. Now I know the importance of getting a digital camera.
    Thanks

That's disappointing to get shots back like that after you had high hopes. It's happened to me and probably most people here, but part of the learning process. I'd recommend not trying something new when the pictures are important - trying the camera out before the trip if it's been awhile to make sure it works OK, then trying out new film, then a new lab. This is of course all hindsight, but hopefully we can all learn from it.

Try the next roll of film at a different lab if you want, that could be part of the problem. It could be that the negatives are OK but they just weren't printed very well, but hard to say without seeing an example. If a shot was taken at night or in low light and looks grainy, then they probably tried to lighten the print too much if it's really grainy.

Digital cameras are really good at a lot of things - but they're not perfect.

I'm sorry your pictures were disappointing - I think all of us here can relate to that feeling. However, 27 years waiting to go to Punta Cana - and your pictures didn't turn out well. If it's the processing, you will know when you take the other roll somewhere else. Then, you can take the negatives back and get other pics made.

Also, keep in mind. There are some decent Point & Shoot digital cameras out there for about $150 now. Unless you want larger images (8x10+) they work very well for 4x6, 5x7, etc. And they're great for posting on the web.

Let us know how your other roll of film works out.
