    Grab Shot

Last night a stormed rolled in across our house. I got the camera, set it up on a tripod and seconds after I opened the shutter, I got this.

I got off five frames before it started raining, and this was the only one that I got lightning in.

    Re: Grab Shot

Well when I saw the title I expected to open the thread and find someone grabing their buddies backside. I guess I just didn't have enough faith in you Speedo.

I have to admit I like this a lot more than I would have the kind of grab shot I imagined. Nice work. Share your tech data with us.

Why would Speed waste his time grabbing anyone's backside beside Dawn's?

    Hey Brian,

I won't bother telling you how long it took me to get my first lightning shots. Here in coastal NC, when it's lightning, it's usually raining. It's not all that common to be able to see the lightning as the storm is coming at you. Add to that the fact that I'm more or less surrounded by trees, and this view (to the northwest) is the only really open sky I've got toward the horizon.

Going through some shots I took last month, and I see that whatever is behind these particular trees is really attracting the lightning.

    Hey, you're not the first...

    :-D

Tech data: D200, Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 set at f 16 (it was still twilight and I didn't want to burn out the image), and a 15 second exposure. Large, Fine JPG, ISO 100, WB set to sunny.

    ;-)

I normally shoot at f 8 for 30 seconds when I shoot lightning, and I use the widest lens I've got.

Here's a few shots (cropped) of lightning in the sky that I shot on May 26th. I was very fortunate in that I was able to take 39 frames that night before it started to rain on me. I got lightning in about half of them.

Yes, Speed is now shooting a D200. Which, let me be the first to mention, is a NIKON, of course!

    ;-)

Don't worry, I still have my N80 and my F5, along with about 40 rolls of Superia Xtra 400 and 10 rolls of Sensia 100.

I hate to admit it but that was my first thought. I was just to much of a gentelman to actually say it. So I cleaned it up a bit. Just shows where our minds are Rick.

    Re: Grab Shot

    Hi Speed,

I should probably stay out of the butt-grabbing conversation, so let me just say that you have some very nice lightening shots here. I've never attempted any myself, but I think about it every time we have a storm, and I can imagine how difficult it must be. Not to rain on your parade (ha), but I can't help but notice that your recent digital shot is much noisier than your older film (I assume) shots. Is that just an unavoidable reality of long exposures with digital, or is there some other explanation? I'm curious because I just got my first DSLR too, a D70s. I hope you don't mind me asking.

Oh, and I think I would stay away from that spot behind the trees if I was you.

    Thanks,
    Paul

Speed went DSLR and grab shots.

    "Ain't digital grand?"

    Nice "electrifying shooting" !

The DSLR lets you know right away if you got the shot, you did!

On the other side of the grab shot topic, I'll retain some of my dignity and just say, Speed, you did mention a time or two that your lovely wife was a G.R.I.T.S. and my experience there of indicates that some grab shots might not end well, hmmmm. :blush2:

Keep 'em coming and glad to see you are enjoying your conversions to the "dark side".
