first pics from the 20d

SO. I didn't intend to get this camera, as I was quite happy with the 10d. Here's the story.

I've been talking with my husband all week about a backup camera. I was looking at the digital rebel. He was saying why would you get something that is less than what you have now, I was saying it's a back up, he's saying just look for another 10d. Back and forth we go, all week, until I start looking at rentals. I'm doing some shooting this weekend that's fairly important to me, and I don't want to go in without a backup.

So, today he comes down with a fever, and is stuck on the couch. Since he is not going anywhere, he has to spill the beans. He's been working with the local camera store at purchasing a 10d. Well, they are getting in the 20d and aren't restocking the 10d, so they say they will sell him the display, discounted. Only they can't find the box. So they call the other store, turns out they sold the box without the camera, so they were going to be calling to get the camera, so that ones gone.

Now it's the rebel or the 20d, and he is not going to buy the rebel. So I picked up the 20d this afternoon.

First couple shots, no ps except resizing. Usually I have my focus point set to the center, and then just work around that. Once it occured to me that the 20d was autofocusing all over the place, things got better

So far I really love the color, I shot on ap, no adjustments to the camera at all so far (except to set the focusing point)

What is the backup for? Are you shooting more dance performances?

I'll be shooting the dance stuff indefinitely. The parents are thrilled that someone is finally doing it, especially the ones who's daughters have been dancing for years. I've gotten quite a few comments on how this is the first time they've gotten pics of the actual performances, and that they really hope I continue to do it, along with the rest of the performances during the year. Right now I do one in June and one in December, possibly 2 depending on if I can fit it in with our stuff, and each performance is like 3 or 4 shows.

I just tried it and it worked fine for me. Can you try again and let me know if you have the same problem? Maybe try logging out and logging back in, too. But definitely let me know if it doesn't work. That wouldn't be good.

Adina, whould you please try to shoot something at ISO800, 1600 and 3200 and post it here? Can you also shoot at ISO3200 and underexpose like one stop or so and then fix it in Adobe Camera RAW to normal exposure? It is going to show how good the camera in noise department. If it is as good as Mark II. fom many photographers who do not need 8fps it is going top be THE ANSWER.

No matter what camera you used on your daughter (the BW behind the bubble solution) I LOVE IT! If having the new camera makes it easier to capture these images (for which you have always had a great eye) then RIGHT ON! Keep on postin!

As a recent upgrader from the 10D to the 20D I can echo your reviews - the nine focus points and the color/sharpness are far superior as is the battery life. However I am really disapointed to note that Adobe Camera RAW does not work with the 20D - apparently Adobe are working on an upgrade wihtout much assistance from Canon. Best extimates say it should be available inside the next two months.

I haven't noticed any problems yet, except the sucky tones that come from the b&w mode. But again, haven't used it that much.

Dance photography is something I've been trying to be successful with for the past several years. Since most performances are indoors, blurs is the common problem. I would LOVE to see some of your dance photos, to get a better idea. What kind of camera and flash have you been using?? I'm DESPERATELY hoping to hear back from you soon!

Back focus is where through the viewfinder it appears you are focused on an object, but when the picture is taken the focus is behind the intended target.

Some speculate it is the camera while others think it is just an ID10T user error. I think DP review stated there was a little back focus on thier test shots with the D70.

focusing sometimes(depends on the setting) kicks my hiney(sp?) but once you get used to it...you learn to "select" your focus...I lost my manual within two days of getting the D70 back in May so I'm sure there is a more technical explanation...but that's all I can offer...

I also shoot Dance, I use a 10D. What I like about it is you can cahnge the color tempt.(the color of the light) from 5500k (daylight) to 2400k (tungsten/stage light). Give it a try, you'll find a more natural looking light.Good luck with the camera.
