D70 at 1600ASA

I just wanted to share an experience I had. My daughter dances with a professional company (Latin Ballet of Virginia) and during their latest, annual Christmas-time performance of "The Legend of the Poinsettia", I was called on to take pictures of the last show - at the last moment...

As a proud Dad, I usually go to relax and enjoy the performance but in this case I was working - in a tricky situation. I had never shot my D70 at 1600ASA but in this case I had no choice. I was very impressed. With a little help from noise reduction plug-in software called "Neat Image" (a life saver in this instance) I produced results like the one posted here.

Oh,...and going back to being the proud Dad, this is a photo of my daughter, Kelly, during that performance.

Very nice! There's none of the graininess that I've had with my D30 at 1600. Nice color, nice setting, and your daughter is lovely.

I'll have to look into the plug-in. I'm always trying to take photos of stage performances (mostly high school concerts and plays) where a flash just isn't done. If I can get that kind of clarity at 1600, I'd be thrilled!

You could always come over from the dark side and buy the D70!!

Above all the technical stuff, this is a really great shot! Looks great as far as noise goes, I'll have to check out Noise Ninja. How did it look right out of the camera?

Lovely shot, curious if you could share a link to this plugin as I would love to be able to utilize the ISO 1600 for low light conditions and not have as much noise as it common.

I've been very pleased with the lack of noise on both the 10d and 20d up to 800, the 20d I've shot at 3200 (or H) and gotten nice photos. they were grainy/noisy, but not unusable.

Thanks Adina. Yes, that's the web page. another view - the original did have quite a bit of noise but, overall, not any more than I would have expected from standard Fuji NPZ 800ASA which is my choice when using film.

I didn't intend for this to become a Nikon vs. Canon or Ford vs. Chevrolet thing...

Heck yeah! For me, it's all about the image. You've done a great job with your tools and really, it's a great shot. You should be very proud of it!

I've never shot NPZ but know it has a great reputation. A shot like this with a lot of dark areas is a good test for noise. If you have time, one thing I'd be interested in seeing is a 100% crop of the before and after. I don't think this should be a Brand X vs. Brand Y thing, but more of what this software can do for you. I've got a Fuji S2 which I don't use at 1600 because it's very noisy. 800 looks great but 1600 is pretty bad - maybe I should get one of the noise reduction software plugins out there and try it again.
