    Crashed my car.

well, okay, crashed is maybe to strong of a word, perhaps broke is better. I broke my car. Condensed version...I slid right down the ramp in the parking garage and into the door. There is a sensor that you drive over that tells the door to open, so they can keep the snow and cold out in the winter. Well, over the sensor, onto the sheet of ice, into the steel door.

As I tend to be an optimist (which, given my luck, is sometimes all that gets me thru the day) I'm looking on the bright side. Had I slid slower or the door gone up faster, it would have come right thru my windshield and into my face. As it is, we'll pay the deductable and get the car fixed. Pushed the door right off the track and dented it pretty good, though.

Impact jarred the whole thing, even though it didn't hit hard, and now my cd changer is screwed as well. I'll be getting the estimates tomorrow and Monday.

Bummer. This is my first ever winter of driving in ice and snow. I love my Subaru Outback. But I've still slid it on a steep downhill coming home from skiing when it was stormy. Snow is scary stuff.

Your car looks pretty good. Hope it doesn't cost you too much. But that's what we get insurance for.

BTW I hope you are fine too.

    Re: Crashed my car.

No cameras in the car, so they are fine. We're used the snow, and have been driving in it forever. Got quite a bit yesterday, but was mostly cleaned up by the time I went out this morning. I'm fine, frustrated, because it's such a stupid thing. Really, who does this happen to?

We'll need to replace the side, the hood and the grill, all are dented and scratched up. Possibly the bumper, I didn't stand around and look at it.

And that's why I drive a big car, and not an Escort.

Sorry to hear about your accident adina. Dylan8i brings up a good point, you are very lucky your airbags didn't go off. Hopefully the estimates won't be too bad and hopefully it won't kill your premiums. Best of luck with the insurance people

    Re: Crashed my car.

Adina - sorry about your accident. I'm really glad you're not hurt. However - about the car. Although it doesn't "look" bad, from my experience I can tell you that it's always worse than it looks - $$$ wise at least. I had barely a dent in my trunk when I got rear-ended, but the trunk (door) needed replaced - all in all it was close to $3,000.

If your cd player was damaged, there must be some internal stuff that happened too.

The main thing is you and your photo equip are okay!

Baah - a little "Wisconsin Chrome" (duct tape) and you'll be all set!

I know what you mean about being surprised - all the snow gets cleaned up but every once in awhile you find a little slippery spot at just the wrong time. I could have had a similar story a couple of weeks ago were it not for the car in front of me moving out of the way at the last second. Cars can be fixed, glad you're OK.

Glad to hear your OK Adina!

I'm with Steve, a little duct tape is all you need. The color looks like it would almost match too.

Duct tape! Lift kit! BIG tires! Yeah!
I'd say they,(the apartment or whatever), is at least partially responsible if they didn't keep the slope clear.

    Re: Crashed my car.

So Sorry Adina. I know how quickly something like that can happen. Being in insurance I see and hear stories like yours often. So many times there is very little or nothing the driver can do once the chain of events is set in motion. Just glad you were not injured, there isn't vehicle made that can't be repaired or replaced, our friends are a different story. The estimate may surprise you. It seems every time I see one my chin hits the desk. They always are higher than I think they are going to be. Stay safe!

    Re: Crashed my car.

Liz is right. I had a Porsche rear-end me last summer. His hood crumpled (poor guy), my rear door didn't even look damaged outside of a small scratch of paint. But when they got the wheel off, turns out the door was bashed in underneath and it cost $3000. His insurance paid for it. However, when my son crashed his car two weeks ago during that one really fluffy snowstorm (I know, they're all becoming a blur lately), his damage was $4000. Our deductible is $1000. We have to cough it up tomorrow in order to pick the car up. *sigh*

Are they making you pay for the garage door too? Or do they acknowledge that it was not your fault?

Cold CD player/changer mechanisms are very delicate especially when cold since the 'shocks' inside them are stiff and the laser may have been jarred out of alignment.

    I'm glad you're OK Adina.

Now, what is wrong with driving an Escort?!

The best car I ever had was my 91 Escort GT. Which I bought while stationed in North Dakota, no less. ;-)

Snow and ice can be treacherous. I'm glad the damage wasn't worse.

And for God's sake, let's be careful out there!
