    An oldie

This one is one of my favorites from my first year as a photographer. I took this at the Indianapolis Speedrome (aka Kitley) just a week or two before the 3 hour figure 8 race in 2001. Wayne Arnold got some Express Parking on top of another car, both cars were new and in their first race. No one injured in what turned out to be a 6 car pileup in turn 2, and in fact the car under Waynes car returned that night for the figure 8 after replacing the carb that was torn off.

This was taken with an Olympus C2100UZ and FL-40 flash, and at the time was one of the top digital cameras. It worked great for shooting races at the Speedrome. I used a Quantam 1+ battery pack for the flash and camera power. The photo was scanned from a 4x6 thats been hanging on a wall at a race shop since I took it in 01.

Here are some falling shots. Too bad I wasn't in the best spot to capture great falls, but I think you get the jist.

Looks like someone went to Sea Otter

I was just around the corner from where you were standing during that race. I looked but didn't see myself in any of your shots. And yes, they had some good slow motion crashes, but very muddy ones

Yeah, I've got a four-five picture sequence of his slow-mo crash. But unfortunately he was able to keep his balance. Just not the same as Gunn-Rita faceplanting.

    It was a great race!

The blind approach to the bend, and the camber, and the bump on the way in
all contributed to this trip to the kitty litter

I had the wrong camera in my hand, the 1DS with 70-200 not the 1DmkIIN with 100-400
So I just shot anyway and hoped for the best.

    Heinz-Harald Frentzen

Annoyingly it looks like NONE of the magazines got a sequence like this ... despite there being at least 4 pros with big L prime telephotos in the shade under the trees.

Now in the heat of the moment I failed.
I didn't step to the left and get that post out of the shot,

It's important to be aware of your immediate surroundings, other fans, kids on the ground, chairs, all that stuff, and to know where you can move to if needed.

Even better to find a spot where there is not a post in between you and the crash :mad2:

    Re: Heinz-Harald Frentzen

Frentzen's last crash at Hockenheim was serious.
He was unconscious and suffered bleeding on the brain after the impact.
So there was concern this time.

Here's a few that I've shot this year. A couple of these I have posted the entire sequence previously in other threads, for this thread, I've just picked one shot from each wreck. All drivers were ok in all of these
