HOW are you panning these images? My handheld technique is not this good on a regular basis.

OH and my 1D seems to track poorly in ONE SHOT and CONTINUOUS AF when shooting at 3FPS and 8FPS on birds coming in for a landing ESPECIALLY.

Wow, what striking birds! I think this is a great shot. The one thing I would like to see is more dof so that both birds are in focus. But it really is composed well, good detail, nice blurred background. Good work!

    Re: White Ibis

When shooting I just do my best to keep the bird in the center of the frame at a nice even pan rate. Sort of like shooting skeet. What problem are you having exactly with the tracking? IIRC I had CF4 set to the fastest update back when I had my 1D and this would throw the tracking off if something passed between me and my subject or if my subject got out of the center of the frame and a high-contrast object was in the background. If you slow down the AF update then these sorts of issues won’t be such a big deal any more. I suggest you try playing around with CF4 (I am pretty sure it is CF4 but I haven’t looked at it in a long time now). The 1D should have little to no trouble tracking subjects like these birds. If the adjusting the CF4 settings doesn’t help you might want to send your body in for service as something seems like it might be out of adjustment. Here are a couple of other shots I took this past weekend with my digital rebel with the EF 100-400 IS.
