This shot is a good example that just taking a shot of a nice sunset/rise doesn't work in general, it's leaning towards a snap shot kinda idea ("look what a nice sunset!").

The added silhouette makes this image special, it increases the overall impact of the shot, together with the portrait format. The silhouette is pure black they way I like to see it.
The building is kept mostly in the lower third and the darker sky at the top brings the whole shot more in balance. I also prefer this 'goldish' color over the 'reddish' color that I see too often, just personal.

This is a very good shot, a winner, well done!

Wow! This is one nice image. I love the colors of the sky and the rays pointing down to the tallest (steeple?). You did a fine job on the silhouette - composition, color/contrast. I enjoyed viewing this image.

You may want to see if you can sell this to a "postcard" company in Nashville....or wherever. It would be worth a "shot" (excuse the pun). Seriously! Hey! You never know - might help pay for that brand new Rebel!

If you can do this with a p&s - I'll look forward to see what comes out of your Rebel.

Tubaman, great picture... being the newbie idiot that I am, I would have suggested to cut off a bit, just a little bit off the top, but it seems now one agrees.

Sorry guys to contradict you all, however, do none of you really think something should be trimmed off the top? From a pure technical perspective, wouldn't you try to have the dark space on top, equal to the hight of the bulding excluding the tower, to be kind of mirrored? This is not a rhetorical question by the way, I am really trying to learn here, I am not claiming I know the answer to that.

Thanks for all the great comments.Kamboura, on my computer the negative space on top is about the same size as the hotel. Probably difference in brightness and the contrasts of our screens. Sometimes computer screens will darken the picture or lighten it, depending on how you have your screen set. I usually like to leave pictures the way they are. I rarely crop or do a whole lot of adjusting outside of sharpening the image just a tad. Besides that...I don't touch the image in anyway. I'm a newbie too by the way, so welcome to the club!!! I've only been shooting for 6 months, so I know very little as well, but I'm learnin. Thanks again to all of you for your great comments. It really means a lot.

Tubaman.. you are absolutly correct my friend. I am now looking at the picture from my work computer. I have a color correction software running here (nothing fancy.. just a shareware I had downloaded), and I see that the dark part is much much smaller than on my home computer.

I wouldn't mind it if you'd just tell me a little bit more about what type of crop you'd like. I mean...that's just kind of vague. Really man...you gotta start communicating better.
