"Raindrop" in Black & White

Okay, This was shot b&w Originally, I like it, but some people don't really like the out of focus foreground thing.....I guess its subjective, but I know that for me, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Does this "work"?

I think the more I look at it, the more I ignore the out of focus parts and I am peering into the water to see all the interesting things going on in it and that doesn't bother me at all. I think if you cropped it any you would not really know what the out of focus parts are and that would be a distraction. Its like you are spying on some little world. I think I like it!

it might not bother me as much if the glass globe wasn't cropped...maybe if it had more breathing room all around...it is interesting though because it has enough texture to draw your eye away from the blurred objects...cool idea

When I first looked at it and wondered how you got a drop of water to stand like that, I was impressed. But after a moment I recognized the object as a glass globe, which shattered the illusion for me. Now I see a picture of a glass globe with out-of-focus foliage in the foreground, and it doesn't work for me anymore. I see potential in the setup, but the shot itself doesn't work IMO. I think it would be better if the leaves were in focus more. If they were in color I'd like it more -- especially if the shot was artificially colorized with yellowish-green leaves on a deep brown table. (make the background deep, deep green.) And being focused might help that blob of darkness on the right. Or a crop.

Definitely play more with these objects, they have potential to be a very artistic shot. I just think *this one* is not quite there yet.

Nat - Suggestion Taken! I will check my negatives and see if there is more space on the left side, I didn't do any cropping on this, but maybe the scanner cut some off that side - i will check....Although if this one is full frame, the globe would still be cut off by that leaf.....But I will Look and see if I have any other shots of this! ( If not, i could always go back ( its my friends balcony) and reshoot!

Kelly - I'm sorry, my intention was not to try to fool anyone ! I just call this one " raindrop", as it reminds me of one ! Although I do find it to be pretty cool that you thought the same - even if for a second! I will print out your suggestions and shoot some color of this..probably not this week but soon....as I am busy setting up my new scanner and dsl.. (YEA!!) Also One Question for you : The "blob" of darkness" on the right is the planter that the spider plant is in... You say "shoot color", but the planter is that generic green plastic kind.....does your suggestion still stand? I think that the green plastic container may cheapen it... make it look like 'everyday' and take away from the abstract shapes that i feel it conveys now. Any thoughts?

Kelly, Yes, I just happen to have some burlap here at the office ( among other strange things to have at an office) Anyway, I will try your idea. Thanks so much for voicing your opinion!
