Well , as you stated, you could have benefited from a stronger zoom. the bg is also distracting and hides the subject further. Less dof and a longer zoom would have helped here.

I think if you don't have a longer lens, you have to frame the picture differently. I don't know how to do it here, but right now, the picture would seem to be about the street sign. Sort of: "Street Sign with Mockingbird," rather than "Mockingbird on Street Sign." By coincidence, I photographed a mockbird today with a longer lens and will post it soon if you would care to comment.

I find the trees to be distracting, and the bird just appears to be engulfed by the sign as well as everything else.
