I prefer it this way round Gary, as you say they meld together better, and I feel as if there is a more dynamic sense of movement from left to right with the diagonals of the path and the light which helps you 'read' the story.
Introducing the figure first now brings an interesting element of subjectivity to the second shot, as the viewer is 'feeling' what it is like to be that figure in the doorway. There is a far greater sense of empathy, a much stronger feeling of being in their head.
Another interesting take on this same idea may have been to have the same two shots, but with an empty doorway in the first inviting the viewer in, and only the barest hint of a figure in the darkness of the second - but perhaps I'm just turning your shots into a horror film!
