    Another Water Shot

Took this a couple weeks ago while visiting family. Any suggestions or comments welcome.

Very nice shot. The change in the flow characteristics is very nice and the curving shapes in the water are great. I think all that colored framing distracts from the shot. I took it into another program so I could look at it without the distraction.

    Chunk,

Thanks for your comment. I am trying ideas for matting and framing some of my prints. I get tired of just white or black mat-board. I have attached the image unmated, thanks for your input.

I know that my preferences in matting and framing are not universal. I usually just like a white mat with a simple frame to isolate the picture from it's surroundings to allow it to be enjoyed without outside influence. If the photo has lite areas around the edges it may need a plain dark mat to contain it. I think all good pictures look good this way. I know that is not always the choice of someone who is decorating a room where they want all the elements blending or working off one another. I don't think pictures are enhanced by their matting, or if they are they were maybe weak to begin with. Yours are good strong photos that don't need outside enhancement.

Exactly what Chunk said. Great curve in the composition, and he shares my taste in framing. Actually, matte black Neilsen frames are what I use with my white mats. IMO, colored mats generally look tacky and call attention away from the print.

I really like this shot a lot. It's not often you see an abstracted water flow like this with such nice artistic values. I like the way the flow lines are sharp and then sort of fade to that slow-shutter silk look at the bottom. Colors are really nice as well, even the framing you chose. Nice work.

Thanks for the reply and comment on the framing. I like the framing but don’t feel it makes or breaks the image. I posted this shot because I wondered if the amount of leaves created too much clutter and detracted from the image, (I am way to anal). I'm still unsure but have not heard that comment so I guess it is good as is. I do like the flow and composition and it turned out much better than I thought it would when I took it. I was after one shot and as I turned around to head back there was this one. Funny that the shot I was after didn't turn out but this one did. Go figure. Again thanks for all the positive feedback.

hi there.. This is a beautiful shot of moving water and leaves. Just wonderful. I agree with Chunk and Another View about the framing. Keep it simple and it shows off your photo. You don't want the framing to out do the photo. There's nothing worse than framing a beautiful shot and then hearing people say "What a gorgeous frame". lol In Art school they only allow white matting with black frame, period. So let me say, without the matt, it's an absolutely beautiful shot.

    Hi Kit

Thanks for the reply. Yes I know all to well about the white / black mat rule as it applies to photography. I was an art major and all projects had to be done this way. I am just experimenting with different matting not to detract but to enhance. I agree you do not want your matting to take away from the image, however most painting are framed with textured and complementary framing some of them are very ornate. As well photojournalists alnog with others have burned, torn, left the negative markings, etc around the edges of thier prints. Just looking for additional ways to frame a print but appreciate your thoughts. For now I will return to the standards, while secretly working on a new way to frame photographic images.

    Regards

    Phil
