    55, on it's side

Yep, you guessed it. . .Can Series.
Personally, I'm very pleased with this as it is just as I visioned it. I was driving through Floyd Bennet field, I saw all these drums on their side, and well, you know, i was like a kid in a CANdy store.
Always interested in your thoughts. . . . . thanks

I really like how you've captured a sense of depth in this shot. Too often the camera flattens the scene. Not here.

    Nice.

    Re: 55, on it's side

Better and better, Gary, don't stop. The strong perspective really makes this shot and it was worth all the effort to shovel that snow in there. (I know, I know , but I had to accuse you of it anyway)

The dark rim on the right side of the can makes it seem cut out rather than exisiting within the scene. Maybe a bit less saturation, at least in that area or a smudging of tha line a bit would help to soften it. Maybe it's because it was sharpened after resisizing.

I think this is one of the strongest in the series. Those tank traps and the interesting crosses in the distance set it off.

    Nice work.

Gary, I agree with Kelly: there is a lot depth here, which compliment the scene very well. I must say that I prefer this shot over some of your more recent cans shots involving smaller cans. Somehow, I'd say that this one is more similar to your first shots of the series yet the depth and the angle of view give it an identity of its own.
What I like about this particular picture (and your olders of the same series) is that it doesn't feels staged (although you made your staged shots look interesting and I already know your opinion on the topic, which I respect) and that the background feature various elements of interest which add to the scene without distracting from the main subject. Also, your sky rendition is top as usual.

    regards

Hi, The picture looks like very 3-dimensional. The snow in the can gives a feeling that water has been flowing out but was instantly frozen (time was frozen?). I am not sure about the logs. Did you mean something by including them in the shot?

To go with your inventiveness in composition and perspective for this series, I am also impressed with your ability to keep the color in the cans looking both pastel-like and vibrant at the same time. Nearly unreal but always pleasing.

As an aside, I recently visited a newly opened restaurant in my area. The name of the restaurant: "Can Can". (Sorry...)

    Re: 55, on it's side

Great shooting, definatley one of my favourites after viewing some of your series. As pointed out, the depth feeling you get here is amazing, and definately is a huge plus for this picture. The one 'critique' that I have is that right under the horizontal log, there is a black something (a telephone pole?!), but it is a tad distracting, but it can be removed.

Great shot, and love the composition,

    Jared

    Re: 55, on it's side

Kelly. . . .thanks for your thoughts on this, glad to hear the dimensional aspect of this came across well.

Chunk. . . . lol, and now I've got a shovel in my camera bag to go along with my crowbar and spraypaint. Thanks as always, I appreciate your views. I agree with you in that softening up those edges on the rear and maybe bottom a bit would help blend it to the scene. I don't know if it will appear this way in the print though. Will have to keep note of that. btw, I did not know those were tank traps, but that makes sense as this is an old military base and airfield that is now being used for lots of great public activities.

Seb . . . thanks for the time, always interested in knowing your opinion and perspective. I like the sky in this as well. As a matter of fact, the sky is always in my mind when deciding whether or not to go out for a shoot. The sky and the time of day are the two things I consider most.

Yoyo . . .thanks for commenting. The log structures were included for no other reason than being an interesting elemnt in the scene and balanced the composition as I liked.

Tuna . . . .I really appreciate your pointing out your thoughts on the colors aspect of the cans as I have developed a sort of step by step process in which I use to achieve this effect and use it the same in all my cans shot series. I try not to let the color be the reason for the cans popping out of the frame but rather the lighting effects to do this, which is always involved in the shot from the time I compose the scene and snap, to the final save as in ps.

James . . . Glad to know you feel this works for you. I do feel these days as if I'm hunting for cans, as they are always in my mind wherever I go.

Jared . . . thanks for the thoughts. I see what your pointing out and yes, it would be very easy to clone it out or part of it. I will consider that before printing.

    Re: 55, on it's side

I think this is the best shot of the series. I agree the depth is great and the snow adds feeling. I am a little distracted by the way the sky turns to white around the wood poles directly behind the can, but I am being too picky...

    Good job!!

    Re: 55, on it's side

Great shot. I like the whole series as well.
After the great depth & composition, I really like the sky. The sky is so subtly dramatic it really adds to the feel of this shot.
The only thing that I think could be improved in this photo would be the at the bottom of the drum (not the bottom of the photo but the real bottom of the drum), that dark brown like where the drum ends & the B&W begins, it's a tad to strong. Isee it on my monitor as a solid brown line going around the barrell. maybe if you soften it a bit it would blend in better.
    Very nicely done though.

Thanks for your thoughts , Liban. Yes, i think thats what Chunk was referring to as well, and I agree with that It does sort of cut it out of the picture, but I will see how it looks in print first before touching that.

    Re: 55, on it's side

I was sure I had posted to this.

From all that has been said - I think its a great shot I don't even mind the block at the base of the barrel.

I do like the way the snow seems to be flowing into the barrel just like the waves of the sea would. TERRIFIC!

Not convinced the tank trap would stand up to a tank for long.

    Re: 55, on it's side

I've been out of town all day today. Didn't have time to read all the post.
But, all I can say is the series is just getting better. When I saw the title I didn't really think of the can series. Honestly, I was thinking............hmm maybe a speed limit sign bent over??
Then I got down to the photo and thought..........should have known.
Perfect angle, the dof seems to be perfect. The dirty snow to the right of the drum is so crisp.

    Re: 55, on it's side

Roger, it's so interesting how we all see things a bit differently. You, with your nautical mind, imagine the snow flowing into the barrel like a wave would. And I vision it like it is flowing out as if the drum tipped over and spilling out. thanks for the comments

Scott, you should have known , huh? lol Yeah, i could see how it would lead you to think of a speed limit sign bent down. glad you feel this image works . thanks for your time . . btw hows the entertainment center coming along. Would like to see some pics of the final project. . .viewfinder would be a good spot for the pics.

Out of all the can shots in the series, this is my favorite. I really enjoy the depth in this image, and usage of color. I like the abstractness of the structure behind it as well.

Never thought I'd like looking at a trash can in detail, but I LOVE THIS SHOT!! I love the 3-D quality of this photo, and the colored can where everything else appears black and white. The sky is marvelous too! Excellent work!
