    Filter question

    Hello....
Thanks for such a nice friendly and informative user group.
I've got an Olympus C-765 that I use to photograph my kids in their sports activities including football, baseball and motocross.

I recently ordered (ebay) an Opteka HD 2x telephoto lens.

I am interested in a UV filter and a Polarizing filter.......
This setup has a lens adaptor which steps up from 46.5mm camera to 52mm. The lens has 52mm rear threads which fit into the 46.5-52mm lens adaptor, and 58mm front threads
My question (please forgive my newbie ignorance) is:

Should I get a 52mm filter to apply before the 2x lense? which I'd assume would allow me to use the lens cap.
    OR
Should I get a 58mm filter to apply after the 2x lense?
    .

The reason for my question is.... if I buy the 52mm filters, I can use them even without the 2x lense. With the 58mm filters I'd only use them together.

    Thanks again
    Donald

I would put the filter 'after' the lense - for the protection. The filter will be protecting the lense even when the cap is off. And of course, there is always the possible problem of vignetting when stacking elements, so the wider the better. Just my opinion, eh? ;)

I hope that camera is working well for you. Please post a review for it. I don't think anyone has posted a review for it yet.

Filters usually go on the front of lenses. The exceptions are long telephotos and big wide angle lenses where the filter size is prohibitive. Some of those lenses have drop-in filters or allow you to attach filters on the back. With your lens, I think attaching a filter on the back would mess up ther focus. Those attachements are made to work at a set distance from the lens. If you put a filter in-between, I think it would throw everything off.

    Re: Filter question

Can't seem to find any reviews of the Opteka filters. Multi-coated, price is right, how about quality? Any Opteka filter users out there? I want a 72mm multi-coated polarizer and 72mms pricey. I know I could use a smaller one, but not planning on any other lenses. Am a big fan of law of diminishing returns. Even the Hoya at this size is pricey and the lower priced filters don't seem to be multi-coated, except for the Opteka.
