Why did the turtle cross the road

This is about a thirty pound turtle that crossed the road this afternoon so I stopped and took a picture of it, Jeff

His shell was about 20inches from front to back.

Is this a land turtle?

My grandfather used to stop and get out of his car to move crossing turtles out of the road to the other side.

Of course this kindly behavior was offset by the fact he'd aim for snakes if he saw them.
