Re: Who would be Interested
Gatlinburg? I drove thru there once and it seemed on par with Orlando FL and the Wisconsin Dells (way too touristy for me)... RMNP is beautiful though and so is the area to the west of it. It's just kind of a shock to come out of a national park into a bunch of t-shirt shops.
I hate to admit that I know this but "hang your hat" is in reference to a country song.
Nashville still seems like a good option being centerally located, has a big airport, lots of different stuff to shoot and last I knew there was a microbrew place downtown.

Re: Who would be Interested
Gatlinburg has a lot of touristy things and is very crowded in the fall. Some great scenery if you get of the beaten path. The biggest problem I see is that it is not very close to a major airport. It would be a big problem for those that would be flying in.

Are you guys talking about the same thing? Paul said "Grest Smoky Mountains" and Steve said "Rocky Mountain National Park." One's in North Carolina and the other's in Colorado - unless plate tectonics has sped up recently.

Re: Who would be Interested
I'm wrong on two counts... Had Colorado on the brain for some reason. Yes, Smokey Mountain National Park is what I meant. I know there are a lot of spring photo workshops down there with the wildflowers, btw.
Also, it's just plain wrong that I knew that song reference... :D

Okay, so maybe Gatlinburg is too cheesy. I'm just brainstorming. People seem interested in going somewhere with nice scenery, but I'm not familiar with anything east of Colorado.
Nashville seems the most practical choice, but it just doesn't sound very exciting. Maybe that's because I don't know much about it.
Can anyone tell us about Nashville? What is there to do there?
Paul

Re: Who would be Interested
Speaking of Gatlinburg, and country music quizes, here's a lyric from a country song. Can you name the title and artist?
Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.
Nashville sounds pretty cool to me.

Re: Who would be Interested
johnny cash ... " boy named sue" i do believe
-
Re: Who would be Interested
Well if it's Johnny Cash I would admit to knowing it, but I don't... :)
It's been several years, but Nashville has Broadway which is the downtown area with lots of bars/music and The Ryman (the original one, don't think it's used much anymore). There's a replica of The Parthenon not too far from there. Or a Gibson Guitar factory tour - don't know how many people would be up for that but I doubt they allow cameras. And a Waffle House on every corner.

I would be up for the Gibson Guitar factory tour!!!! Ah, I remember my first (and only) Waffle House visit. I saw so many of them I just had to check it out! I'm pretty sure they wouldn't mind cameras in the Waffle House!

Paul, keep brainstorming. I like that you're putting thought into this. For the record, I think the Great Smoky Mountains would be a great place for a photogathering, especially in the fall!
I'm a little tepid on Nashville, too. Somebody would really have to sell me on it before I could see meeting there instead of places like the Rocky Mountains, White Sands, or Grand Canyon...

Re: Who would be Interested
So, working in honor of Natalie, I have prepared a few lists that may sum up our discussions here so far. When Nat comes back next week I'll let her pick up the reigns and create a couple of polls so we can narrow down our decisions. And please, don't take this list as exhaustive! There's still room for more input.
So far...
Locations (in no particular order :D)
Arizona
Milwaukee
Denver
Austin
Nashville
Washington, DC
Albuquerque / Santa Fe / White Sands, New Mexico
Miami
Gatlinburg / Great Smokey Mountains
Things people are looking for in the gathering:
Beer
Tutorials / Workshops
More beer
Anything I'm missing?

Re: Who would be Interested
I can vouch for the beer in Milwaukee!
In fact, there is a restaurant that has a beer tasting thing, if you taste all 120 (or more, not sure) you get a mug!!!
I will take some come to Milwaukee photos in the next week, now that I'm home alone all day.

Re: Who would be Interested
Thanks to Gene for making the awesome map! And thanks to all 23 members who put their locations on the map. I've added all of our proposed destinations to it. I tried to copy the map into this thread but they want you to click on the link, apparently. The highest concentrations of our members are in the northeast/midwest and in the southwest/southern California. Everyone take another look at the map and see where the destinations lie. I for one didn't realize how close Nashville and Gatlinburg are, and how central they are to everyone...

Yes Gatlinburg is very central (to the majority of folks). Isn't there a decent sized airport in Knoxville?...30-40 miles away. We could actually stay there if Gatlinburg is too cheesy, and still be able to make a side trip to the Smoky Mountains.
...just thinking out loud...
It's too bad Austin is located on a tiny island in the middle of a sea of cows.

Okay, we in Milwaukee don't actually count that one as beer. It's one of those "trick name" things.

there is actually some brewery in milwaukee that makes some crap ... but the better brewery is about 6-8 hours south west in a city by the name of ST. LOUIS. they have some cool horses and a spotted dog for their mascotts
i have just touched the edges of the smokies and they was some very pretty scenery in that area ... unfortantely as pointed out by some pics .. the west has some great scenery ....
but i have also heard that the upper east is great also ... i think its a win win situation where-ever is decided to meet up ...
