what you favourite prime lens combo?

    Hi ,
Just interested to hear of anyones special kit of unusual prime lenses they take with them when they go out shooting...

    I started using a 20mm and a 105mm combination only out of the fact that my holster bag would only fit the two primes in it!!...and now I am used to either shooting from very close or weird angles or standing back and using the narrower field of view..{sometimes I curse that my 50's not in the bag but I try to get around it}

Do you have any weird prime lens combinations or have heard of any?
Would love to hear of any ...thanks for your time.

    It used to be,,,,

Until recently, the only two lens I had were a 24mm and a 180mm.
It was what I could afford at the time.
But I have just recently gotten two zooms, a 35-70 and 80-200.
    I will keep the 24.

Re: what you favourite prime lens combo?

When I was shooting mostly with primes a few years ago I would alway have the 24 and 85 mm's with me. Depending on where I was and what I wanted to carry I would add a 135 and or 200mm. Some times added the 50 mm and always had a reversing ring for closeups. Today the only prime I carry is the 105 macro along with three zooms, 18-70 and 80-200 and the 35-70mm for the extra speed of the f2.8 when it is needed. I have always carried a pretty full bag. The big diference today is I only carry one body. With film a always carried two each loaded with a different film.

My usual prime lens setup when I do pack just primes (which is rare):
    20mm f2.8
    50mm f2.5 compact macro
    85mm f1.8
    135mm f2
    1.4x, and 2x extenders for the 135.

Re: what you favourite prime lens combo?

When I shoot in low light, I usually just use my 50 and 85 f1.4 which are the only two primes I own. I'm eyeing the Nikon 28 f1.4 to round out the set but I'd have to sell my wife's car to get it, and I don't think that would go over too well. Plus the 50 and 85 are focal lengths I use on digital but the 28 probably wouldn't be too often. Only one way to find out I guess... Score one for the Canon users with the 24 f1.4 - that's one I'd love to have.

I'd like a 105 Micro, until then I'll stick with the 28-70/2.8 and the 80-200/2.8.

Re: what you favourite prime lens combo?

    Hi

Thanks - this is a nice and interesting thread.

    I have 2 primes - Canon 50mm/f1.4 and 85mm/f1.8

I use both for portraits and street photography and low light on the Rebel 300D

However, since I purchased the Canon 17-40mm/f4L I usually have that lens on my camera as it is one sharp lens and the colors are awesome. The above 2 primes are also sharp with great color - but this little 17-40 is my favorite.

    Have a good weekend.

7 out of my 8 lenses are primes. Routinely bring the 35mm and the 90mm with me. The 90 replaced the 135mm simply because it has a macro function. I recently bought a 180mm as well and have been taking that with me too.

Least used is the 300mm. Then the 50mm. Then the 24mm.

I prefer primes because of their low light capability and their awesome sharpness.

Re: what is your favorite prime lens combo?

I usually only go out with my 35/2mm lens and if I take another which is rare it will usually be a 50 to get a little closer. I find the 35 offers enough DOF for my quick style of street shooting and the f2 is fast enough for most situations.
