    What a week

Earlier today, I was thinking about all the mess going on in the critique forum about standards and how this site is weak in that respect. It made me giggle a little, and here's why.

    Monday - sold a print
    Tuesday- sold another print
Wednesday - promoted to photo manager
Thursday - started working out details for a co-exhibit in a few months. Entered first official competition.

The thing is, all of those are related to knowledge and ability in photography. I have learned everything here, even though it is supposedly too "sugar-coiated" and non-productive. See, sometimes it is ok to be easy on people, you don't always have to be a drill instructor.

Thanks guys! It's going to be a very exciting year. If all goes well, I'll get to announce some ribbons (yay!?) in about 4 weeks.

So, you seem to have said, that you are now working as a photo manager in a store chain, while I assume doing pro. work on the side. Have I got that right? Now ribbons...does that mean that you are also into competitions? If that is the case, then you better pay attention to salon photography rules if that is the level of competition that you hope to get into. Some competitions are also by the way restricted to amateurs, if they do not follow salon photography rules.

If you are working as photo manager, by the way, it still means that unless you have been hired to take photos, or have signed a contract that specifies otherwise, that you still retain ownership of any photos that you take, plus the copyright.

Would be curious, as to what subject matter/category of prints did you sell and did you use your Minolta D5?

    Ronnoco,

Since when did THIS become Salon Photography? Last I knew it was Photography Review.COM, so who cares about Salon Photography rules? We have PR.com rules here.
And I am certain the members here can READ the rules for any contests they enter as well, and don't need you being judge jury and executioner when iot comes to rules or critiques.
Oh, and remember that copyright laws are different hee in the USA than they are in Canada.

    Re: What a week

Wildlife photos to private buyers. So, it's a chain store, the uppers were impressed with my knowledge, and saw it as a possible strength to revitalize the lab and grow sales. That doesn't mean I will be photographing anything for them, simply watching demographics and trying to drive sells by assuring quality and product are in line with those statistics. Which simply means more money (that makes me happy).

The competition is held by the PSA, and has both pro and amatuers. If they do have standards that do not allow me to place, then I will learn from their critiques, and workshops until I acheive those standards. The thing is though, the environment is very nurturing and if you are willing to learn, you can. Not one person will be slamming us.

If you are trying to make me look bad, have at it. It is certainly nice to have someone bad mouth others. It drives me even harder. I never said I shoot as a "pro". Several reasons, I don't want to be tied to a schedule, I don't want someone telling me what to shoot, etc.

The bottom line here is that I have learned something here and it led to a raise, a little praise, and some fun. I'm not saying anything, many times I have said I suck. However I have alot of fun shooting, and nothing beats the feeling of someone asking you to autograph a print, or getting out into the world for some exercise.

The shots were on film, I haven't shot much since the 5D (been busy). Regardless of some opinions, some people like some of my stuff, and that's all that matters. For the record, you haven't seen everything I've done.

P.S. Im ever so certain none of your photos have flopped, but not all of us are as perfect as you. Have a lovely night.

Payn, that is awesome Congratulations on an awesome week! If I hear you get promoted to National Geographic photographer on Friday, I am going to move to Georgia and start drinking the water there ;)

Ronnoco, if you're trying to make this a "Salon Photography Critique Site" you're barking up the wrong tree my friend. We're friends here, not competitors.

Wow! what a great week for you. Congratulations!

I know what you mean about learning everything here. I came to PR about 5-6 years ago looking to purchase a P&S and everyone suggested I get a DSLR. The rest is history. I love photography........and caught the bug at PR!

Enjoy your good fortune, and keep us updated.

Payne, please do not feel like you need to justify your accomplishments to anyone. If I were you, I would stand proud of your incredible growth as a photographer. True, there will always be someone wishing to make you feel small. But the best move, I find, is usually to ignore them Wanting to make people feel small usually stems from a fear of smallness on their part. Sympathy then is the tool that lets me deal with them healthily.

    GL to you!

That's great! Congrads on your week, it's something to be proud of!

What's salon photography? Pretty sure I know what a saloon is though.

I was hoping someone would ask that, so I didn't have to.

Congrats on your accomplishments! I agree, a little praise, a raise, and some fun is as good a reason as any to be thrilled with your week.

    Hurray for you!

They were 8X10 prints of the beluga whale portrait, and the b&w sheep portrait from a few months back. Both can be seen at the link below as #'s 3 and 11. The crops were slightly different to bring them more into the rule of thirds, but you get the idea.

Thanks for all the well-wishing folks.

Since we've seen this "salon photography" thing so much, I decided to do some research. It is a traditional style that apparently originates in the orient. Each culture seems to have it's own slight variation though. Some people say it is a dead form and say that modern art photography is the future. However, a few say modern art is dead, and salon will last forever.

Imagine if you will the way the back pocket of your jeans looks after putting your wallet in it every day. It gets that outline of worn area on you pocket.

Now imagine doing that with a can of Skoal.

Payn, that's great. Don't let anybody pee on your parade. (I wanted to use another word, but this is a family site!)

All this salon stuff makes me laugh. As anyone who has studied art history, knows, the painters in the French salons of the 18th century were accomplished technicians who produced photo-realistic paintings of overly sweet, pretty things without any real emotion -- much like the Wal mart photo studios of today. They adhered rigidly to the rules.

Then, the Impressionists came along and broke the rules and changed everything and while ridiculed at first, they eventually became the most popular school of painting and paved the way for the names we know today. If you go to any museum today, you'll see the Salon painters like Bouguereau relegated to the closets, while Impressionists like Monet are a household name.

I never had a skoal ring. I do have a Dukes of Hazard t-shirt though. Can I still be cool?
