    Quick photoshop question!

    Hey dudes!

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this thread, but I'm going to ask it anyway, cause it's just a little question!!

Is there a big difference between PhotoShop and PhotoShop Elements?

I'm pretty much a beginner in the DSLR world and have never really had a proper play of PhotoShop. Would you recommend PhotoShop or Elements?!

    Tah!!

    Huge difference, but

Elements does most if not all of what most photographers need. Photoshop does just about anything any graphics designer/photographer/artist could ever need and then some. Photoshop is an amazing program. Elements will probably serve the needs of 90% of the photogs out there.

Both are esentally the same program. Elements does not have all the same effects, filters, processes that Photoshop does.

As for your choice, it all depends on what you'd be using the program for.

This pretty much sums up what elements does. If there's something that you need and it isn't described here, I'd suggest Photoshop.

Does photoshop have better levels control than Elements?
Seems like there is no shadow/midtone/highlight selection on the levels editor.

Almost identical - there are selectors for shadows, midtone & highlights. Actually it's the exact same control as Photoshop 5. CS has an Options button that allows you to customize clipping points.

    Re: Quick photoshop question!

Thanks for all your advice, guys!

    And guess what!

Today I finally went out and bought my Canon 300D! Yayyyyy! I'm tremendously excited. I'm yet to figure everything out, of course, but I'm in love with it so far.

And actually, Photoshop Elements 2.0 came in the Canon 300D box! Is that normal?! I had no idea it came with it... I was set to go to the computer store after buying my camera, but luckily I checked!

Is 2.0 an older version? Is it still okay? As I said, I'm only a beginner so I'm sure it'll suit me for a little while, but is it okay, in general?

    Re: Quick photoshop question!

I guess there's a 3.0 out there (I googled) but 2.0 will serve you just fine.

I have a degree in graphics and electronic prepress, was trained on Photoshop, used it in the workplace for five years, and thought Elements would have SOMETHING missing that I needed. So far, I haven't found it.

    I use 2.0.

(To be fair, I also use Photoshop. But on those occasions where I've processed photos in Elements, there was nothing missing that I had to close out and go over to Photoshop for. I think it even supports actions, although I didn't spend time looking for that feature.)

The big thing that 3.0 has over 2.0 is RAW support. Other than that, they're very similar.
