    Pma

Is anyone heading to the PMA convention in Anaheim next weekend? I will be there Saturday to check out the latest.. I'm interested in the D700x/D800 that Nikon is apparently releasing soon.

    not me
Normally we'd fly out for a little holiday, and I'd be helping P-J with the coverage.
But with Euphony Communications and Euphony Holdings going into administration - we're tightening belts here.

    Re: Pma

I just checked out this event and discovered a couple things.. First, the actual trade show is not open to the public. This is an industry based event. That being said, if you register as a professional photographer, they will allow you access. Furthermore, if you register online as a professional portrait photographer you will be granted free admission to all 3 days of the PMA. To get your free admission to all three days go to www.pmai.org and click on the "Register" button in the gold "2010" box. When you reach the part in the process where it asks what you profession is, select "Pro Photographer - Portrait" or something like that. Near the end it will ask you for a code and reference. Input the following:

    Code - calport
    Reference # - pma2010

I look forward to seeing some of you there.

Thanks for the info Brian. Maybe we can get some lunch or dinner if we meet up.

    I'll be there. Of course

Just starting to put together a plan. Even if everyone can't make it to the show, we should try to meet up somewhere. The downtown LA gathering we had a few years ago was great. Anyone up for another trip to the market downtown again? I need some tacos!

I'm in for a meet up. And PJ, if you need a place to stay, I have a spare bedroom. Though if memory serves, you have family in the area.

Eric, lunch / dinner sounds great. We can knock out the details closer to the event. Meeting up beforehand would be cool too. It would be more fun with someone else there.

    Re: Pma

I'm up for a meetup at least, only being about 2 hrs away.

Not open to the public eh... Sounds like that consumer electronics show in Vegas a few weeks back.

I just read this on their site (their very poorly laid out site, it seems). It appears you can get in if you're an educator or student, too:

    Who Should Attend?
    · Specialty photo retailers
    · Mass merchandisers
    · Electronic retailers
    · Online photo retailers
    · Custom framing retailers
    · Scrapbook retailers

    · Sales Reps and Wholesalers
    · Photo educators and students
    · Press
    · Industry Analysts
    · Professional photographers – portrait, school and event
    · Central, on-site and online photo printers
    · Professional color image printer and publishers

I been informed that Canon will not be Attending this years PMA, due
to PMA decision to move the venue out of Las Vegas this year.

Canon and Leica have both decided not to go this year. I hadn't heard that it was because the show had moved from Vegas, though. Typically, it's in Vegas for a few years and in Orlando for a few years. And I remember one year, before I ever went, when it was in New Orleans. I think it's more a financial and strategic decision than one about the location. I also expect they'll have some presence during the show because the press will be there. They may not be selling to dealers. But I think they'll still want to show their new stuff to the press.

I just called them. Their policy is Pro photographers get in but it's apparently not a big deal. I explained to her that I'm a moderator on a photography website and need to know the latest technology. The woman in registration was very nice and said she is mailing one out to me today.

I think anyone can get a badge if they have a halfway decent reason -- give it a try.

    Previous/more PMA attendee news

I will be interested in a first hand report of what really is the tone and atmosphere at PMA. Last fall (2009) there was quite a bit of 'buzz' and concern about who would be attending in 2010 and if there was a major future for this tradeshow.

At the end of September news came out regarding Canon and then in October about Leica skipping the 'festivities'.

I wrote two articles about this at the time which provide some background about these camera makers decision.

Canon USA skipping Out on PMA 2010
    and
    Leica bypassing PMA 2010!

It looks like it is all about business and the best expenditure for marketing. Of course jokes and sly asides about the show being in Anaheim are unavoidable.

Sounds like Canon and Leica simply don't want, or can't afford, to do every event anymore, esp when they're timed to close together. You mention CES: I was going to go to the CES (which isn't photo oriented) with some friends, but they had the same restrictions - not open to the general public, where you have to work in the field or be a biz owner, and be ready to prove it to even attend. Phooey! Seems these shows really choke off attendance with such rules.

I don't think this convention has restrictions. My friend attended it last year and really enjoyed it. He brought me back some great reading material.

I'll be there every day. I'll be super busy, though. Let me know if you guys are interested in helping out. I am pretty much doing this on my own this year. If there's something you'd like to cover, I'm interested

I'll be in LA the whole week after. I will be working and visiting people. I'd still like to squeeze in a trip downtown for some photos and tacos. I love the Mercado!

I'm going to try and register tomorrow and will most likely be there on Sunday.

I'm not much of a writer. I'll help out with video if you need it. I can shadow you and record the whatever booths you think are of value.

    Re: Pma

Guys, I will be there Saturday all day. I would like to do Sunday also but I have a business trip that week and have to fly late Sunday morning from San Diego.

Poker, PJ, et al, I have no particular plans for that day, so if you are going to be there that day we should all meet up / party / Whatever. I can't remember if I've been to that convention center (ran the OC marathon and might have picked up my packet there) but Anaheim has some fun stuff I'm sure.
