Can you send Becky your prayers and good vibes please

My daughter, Becky, and I were at the dentist today because her jaw is very swollen and she is an enormous amount of pain. Here is a pic of Becky today.

3 dentists in the room and 6 x-rays later show that she has a massive abscess in her jaw. The swelling and pain is covering from the left side of her chin right round to the far right of her jaw.
The reason for the abscess is the nerve/s in her tooth/teeth is dead (and yet, she has gorgeous teeth). We are not sure whether it is one tooth or more.

She has been given double anti-biotics by the dentist. She is, of course, on pain killers and she is holding ice on her jaw.

Once the infection has cleared up they want to give her root canal treatment. The dentist tells me this is to try to save the teeth. Worse case scenario is, she will lose her teeth

This may seem minscule to some and I know there are people worse off than Becky, but, it hurts me so much, seeing her constantly cry and being in so much pain. Although, she is 15, and towers me height wise, she is still my baby girl y'know.

Please can you send Becky the following:
if you are religious, your prayers would be much appreciated, if not, then please send some positive thoughts and good vibes.

    Thank you sooooo much!

    Ali

Prayers, Good Vibes, and Lots of love and Courage for the Beautiful Becky!

I had an exposed nerve (dentist inflicted) about 10 years ago and it felt like someone put a live wire in my mouth. Best of luck to her, I hope she's on the mend and feeling smiley again soon.

Not miniscule at all. The physical pain of the infection coupled with the emotional pain of the thought of losing those beautiful teeth is enough to make anyone hurt. Feel fully deserving of all the love and healing coming your way, for her and for you.

Re: Can you send Becky your prayers and good vibes please

Ok so I take the miniscule comment back.
Thank you, everyone, so much for all the kind words of reassurance.
Becky is feeling alot better today.

Back at the dentist this afternoon, Becky sits in the chair.
"I am going to open up the tooth" the dentist says.
The shock on Becky's face, you can imagine, I am sure.
"No anasthetic, just be brave and I'll try to be gentle. You won't feel it because the nerve is dead".

Becky was incredibly brave! The dentist says he prefers to see puss but could only wash out the bacteria. The abscess is in her tissues. I keep hearing the words "eating into her jaw".
With the temporary root canal treatment carried out, the dentist wants to finish it and seal it on Tuesday 3rd April.

Lots and lots of prayers, good vibes and positive energy is needed here.
    Please keep them coming.

Re: Can you send Becky your prayers and good vibes please

    Owwwww
Give her a hug from us !

    And without anaesthetic !
Well done Becky, any bravery to spare?
No, you're right, I'm not brave - a total wussycat.
As a teenager I needed tranquilisers before I could go to the dentist.
Now I need a change of clothes and a shower afterwards because of the nervous sweat.

Abscess is nasty, and after my failed (twice) root canal and extraction I had an infection that needed double painkiller and two different types of antibiotic. Yet before the treatment I had no pain whatsoever. I didn't go back to the dentist for years after that !
Yes, total wuss. Angie says typical man - you don't do pain.

Sounds like she's well on the road to recovery, but if it's tissue and can't be drained or flushed then it may take longer on antibiotics.

I thought it was mumps perhaps, she's so swollen.
But I guess Becky's young enough had MMR shots? Angie's mumps in her late twenties caused such excitement at the doctor that all the medical students had to come in and see it so that they would recognise it in future

I just got back from the dentist this morning - assessment for getting on the NHS list.
Angie had a filling this morning - saying to the Dentist "I told you there was something wrong last month" didn't change their opinion that it was OK ... but isn't now.

Hope this is all cleared up soon, and we get some more smiling photos !

Re: Can you send Becky your prayers and good vibes please

Prayers said. It's very important that Becky follows through with her antibiotics until finished to prevent spawning resistant bacteria. If the swelling and pain don't begin to subside by day two or three, she may have resistant bacteria, and may need to be switched to a different antibiotic. Be aware that she may experience nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach while on antibiotics. I usually recommend my patients to take with food as a buffer. Her dentist may have to perform an open and drain procedure to help alleviate the swelling. Just wondering if she's had symptoms (cold, hot sensitivity, spontaneous tooth pain) prior to this event. Teeth rarely necrose spontaneously, except in cases of physical trauma to the teeth (usually a sports injury, or blunt force trauma to the area of the affected teeth). Six radiographs ? Sounds like either a very large continuous abcess/cyst, unless that many teeth had individual abcessess. Did the doctors say if deep decay was present? Abcesses without obvious decay would get my red light flashing in a hurry. Hopefully it's your ordinary run of the mill abcessed teeth due to necrotic nerves from decay or trauma, and not something else (odontogenic myxoma, actinomycosis...).
Keep us posted, and I'd love to hear how things go.
    God bless you

Re: Can you send Becky your prayers and good vibes please

Guess I should have read the rest of the subsequent posts :-) Sounds like he did an open and drain procedure without any drainage noted. Just have to wait and let antibiotics and nature take its course. Just a note about not using anesthetic in this case-it's actually a wise choice. If the nerve is dead, the only discomfort will be from the vibration of the bur on a sore tooth. If it's temperature sensitive, it's a live tooth and the abcess belongs to another tooth or it's a cyst. Also, it's a bad idea to inject into an area with that much swelling and infection (potential needle tract infection), and the fact that anesthetic ph gets affected enough from infection to render it less than effective in many cases.

Re: Can you send Becky your prayers and good vibes please

    Thanks Leon.
Yeah I think it did get their red lights going.

This is a long on-going problem.
When she was at Junior school Gina accidentally kicked her on the chin.
She had a small bubble come up in that area but it burst on it's own.
Then when we moved house I changed Dentists and she must have had something similar again because an X-ray was taken and she was referred to the dental specialist at the hospital.

He said the nerve was dead and if the problem continued she would either have to have root canal treatment or have the teeth removed.
I don't think it was explained very clearly to us though because since then, she has been cleaning her teeth, meticulously, thinking that this would help save her teeth.

The dentist that she saw the other day must have been the top dentist in the surgery because he carried out the work yesterday.
He explained things beautifully. Showing us the X-ray and pointing out the nerve that was dead. He also described root canal treatment as "just like a filling". Drilling into the back of the tooth and washing out the bacteria and then filling it.

I understood why no anesthetic was given. I gathered that he wanted to test the surrounding teeth for sensitivity and that he didn't want to inject into the area of the swelling.
He said all the other teeth were still alive but how this is going to affect the other teeth we don't know yet, we will just have to wait and see. We will have to just take it one day at a time.

Hopefully she will be alot better on Tuesday. The dentist said he miight use a bit of anesthetic that time.
