    New Holga work

Here are a few black and white shots from St. John. The first two were taken at Annaberg Sugar Mill, a northeastern point of the island. The last is another abandoned Dutch sugar mill along the Reef Bay trail.

I really like that second one, great line from the trail.

I have been meaning to ask you a Holga question..

Have you ever noticed that the viewfinder's angle of view is drastically less than what the lens sees?
I ask that, because on this particular photo. When I was looking through the viewfinder, I remember the cut out in the rock was more or less the dominant item.

    Make sense?

    Thanks!
Always great to see your stuff!

    yes I've noticed that....

Yes, definitely. In fact, there is a Holga mod to correct that - but I'm not that hardcore That does not actually occur with the Diana - that's why the image area is smaller on the negative with the Diana and you can shoot 16 frames with it. I always just compose a little *tighter* than I want it in the viewfinder before I snap the pic - that or take one, then move in closer. It's a big PITB when using the Holga in the studio, though - especially because I like to print full frame, black edge. It sucks to get a great shot, then have that little edge of seamless showing. Grrrrrr........

Ah well - that's the love/hate relationship with the Holga!
    Thanks for looking!

There is a mod for that? Who? What? How?
Does the Holga Mods guy do it?
I just recently noticed this happening!? So the last roll I put through my Holga I did step up a couple of steps. I should be getting it back on Friday.
I have never shot with a Diana.. HMMMMMM?

Thanks for looking? My Pleasure!!!!! I truly enjoy your Holga stuff my Friend in Holga!!

I'm pretty sure it is the Holga mod guy....

I think you really have to dig deep into the site. I could be wrong! I read about it somewhere. Maybe it was another site that explained how to do it. I would google it if it's not the Holga Mod guy.

I noticed it awhile ago, and just sort of shrugged and went on with it .

If you're going to look for a Diana, scour e-Bay and Yahoo auctions. Sometimes they for for over $50 on eBay, but I managed to get mine from Yahoo Auctions for a little over $20. They still have the lovely light leak issues like it's younger cousin the Holga, but what you see in the viewfinder is what you get. Well, as far as crappy toy cameras go! Dianas have a bulb setting as well, though I've never tested it out.

Can't wait to see new stuff....

    Thanks!!! WOW?

I'll take a look then Megs!
I have been trying to deal with it too, but again I only noticed it recently. So with this new stuff I'll have to evaluate it.
I have looked casually at Diana's on EBay, but never seriouly enough to buy one.
    Thanks for the info!

    WOO HOO!

You can do astro-photography with it then!

Find a constellation with bright stars (the Big Dipper would be a good one) and take some shots! Try 30 seconds with 400 speed film. Depending on how wide that lens is, you may get away with 60 seconds without noticeable streaking.

Also, try some shots looking east or west for 10, 20 or 30 minutes for some neat landscapes.

    :-)

    Landscapes?

I suppose I could do the landscapes from the promenade on Hell's Gate near my apartment. Good ideas, but unfortunately, I live a block and a half up from the Triborough Bridge, which is lit up all night. It's too bright for any sort of heavenly photography, whether I use my Diana or my super duper and extremely lonely and neglected Canon 10S. Hm, maybe when I'm in Houston this weekend.....

    Looooooooooove that third one.

It has a "stretch" quality as if you zoomed in while shooting (I know Holgas don't have zooms though)

    Moovy-groovy!

The Holga gives a mysterious and dark mood to the shots which is very nice. The scenes and the camera work well together not to mention the photographer.

    Cool Good work as always

I love your Holga photos Megan. I especially like the last one - but they're all good. I always look forward to seeing them - and enjoy viewing them.

Have you seen the Lensbaby? What do you think about it?

    Waiting for Kokopeli...

Kokopeli ordered a lensbaby, and I'm waiting for him to get his and show us some tests!
I'm low on the fundage right now, so I won't be able to get one anytime soon. Sounds cool, though, I'm for anything that makes photography fun, funky, and experimental.

Thanks, Rick, Gerry, and everyone for looking...

I appreciate the comments. My favorite is #3 as well. I think I'll frame that one for the restaurant this fall... [going to put up my work in a local restaurant. It's contemporary cuban/latino food, so I'm trying to keep the photos Caribbean and palm-tree-themed!]
