The DRebel ahs arrived

Well, I just got my Digital Rebel in...and I'm happy as all get out!!! I love this thing, I'm still trying to figure everything out, but I'm already inpressed. It's so easy to just take it out and start shooting. I'm so excited. The lens that came with it isn't nearly as bad as a lot of people made it out to be...I mean for a $100...it's pretty good. I took the camera to take some test shots and start to get a feel for the camera. Here are the only two I'm comfortable with posting. Like I said...still getting use to the whole SLR experience. ;) I'm still working on understanding the software that came with it. OH yeah, I only have a 512mb card, and using RAW format sucks up a lot of room. I'm not a pro or anything close, and I have a little bit of a trigger finger. Will there be that much difference bettween using Large/Fine jpeg and RAW?? Enjoy.

The rule of thumb I use is that if I intend to do any adjustment of the image at all, I use RAW. If I'm just doing snapshots for printing as 4x6 without adjustment, or for use on the Web, JPG works great.

In short, JPG is my "fun" format. RAW is my "serious fun" format.

You should try fiddling around with RAW and getting used to it. It's quite amazing the flexibility you have in working with the data as it comes straight from the camera. It gives you much more ability to tweak things without introducing noise.

I'm the same boat as you are with the 512MB card. I hope those 1G cards start coming down soon.

I've got both the Rebel 35mm and the DRebel, and generally I use the lens from the 35mm Rebel on the DRebel. I like it better...I don't like using a wide angle very much. But I always carry both around and switch constantly. Sometimes you just need the wider angle.

I'm thinking of getting another lens though, but I haven't done any research yet.

I haven't used the RAW format yet, for two reasons: 1) I don't want to suck up so much disk space, and 2) I'm not sure how to get those shots onto my Mac and open them. So I use the Fine setting with my 512 mb card, and they print wonderfully up to at least 11x14. I haven't tried anything bigger, although I did crop one shot in Photoshop to about the maximum quality loss I could stand, and I was quite impressed. I hate producing jpgs, but for now they're serving my purposes just fine, and I can get about 178 images on one disk before it's full. That's about as many as I can handle downloading at one time. I can't image the download times of a larger memory card.

OK, I guess I'll post the shots I'm talking about. All of them were taken with the following settings in common: Shooting Mode: Sports. ISO Speed: 400. Lens: 28.0 - 90.0mm. Image Size: 3072x2048. Image Quality: Fine

The first one is to show our seats: top row of the San Diego Charger's stadium. Tv: 1/800. Av: 7.1. Focal Length: 38.0mm.

The second one shows basically what we saw from our seats. Tv: 1/125. Av: 4.5. Focal Length: 41.0mm.

The third one I zoomed in on the field as much as possible. Tv: 1/800. Av: 5.6. Focal Length: 90.0mm.

The fourth one is the third one, cropped in Photoshop to the point just before I could begin to see pixellation without much effort. But to me, it's still a very satisfying picture.

Congradulations on getting the DRebel! I absolutely love mine, and it looks as if you snapped a couple of great shots right from the get-go!!

Concerning raw vs. jpeg, let me just say that while I haven't experimented much with the raw format, I have had photos as large as 11x14 printed using the jpeg format (converted in PS into a tiff file @ 150 dpi for printing), and they have turned out awesome when I took them to the camera store and had them developed on Kodak Royal photo paper. In contrast to this I've noticed that when my photos were developed on regular Kodak photo paper, it tended to lose some of the vibrant saturation that I got with the Royal paper.

I just wanted to add that I keep mine uncompressed on JPG and I have gotten great quality up to a 20x30, when printed professionally.

Welcome to the wonderfull world of the DRebel. I just got mine about 2 weeks ago and I have already taken over 200 pictures just messing around with it and experimenting. I wish I had more time to play with it. There are so many options and "tricks" to try out and play around with!! I LOVE it!!! Congrats and good luck.

congrats on the DRebel! Nice shots. I have a mac running OS X 10.3.4 and can open RAW files with Photoshop CS. I have only used that feature once because I have been happy with the results with the highest JPEG setting. Have fun with that camera and post more pics (something I have not done for a while)!
