Talking I'm less disappointed in UPS now.

They delivered today instead of tomorrow. It's still not overnight, but hey, I've got my new studio gear and new 1DmkII to test drive. Post pics soon.

    Congratulations!

Hey Lionheart, don't you also shoot with a 1D? I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts after comparing images. Or even seeing images taken with both cameras.

What kind of dental work do you do?

Cool Hi Liz, some observations on the 1D/1DMkII

I sold the 1D and 100-400 IS lens to Paulnj last year. The images weren't useable straight from the camera for dentistry, which theoretically could be adjusted through the photoshop plug-in that came with the EOS software but I could never get the camera to interface with any computers, either at home or the office. The images always seemed to need just a little tweaking for color balance and saturation. The 10D and D60 images were pretty much good to go straight from the camera. For the purpose of charting in the office, this is very important, since we don't want to spend any time editing photos for the charts. The Dentrix software is designed to upload images directly into the chart from the CF card, and has very limited editing capability (basic cropping and rotation and some ability to add text). Then there was the issue of size and weight. The 1D is a monster, and the assistants were screaming bloody murder with the 100mm macro and MR-14EX attached to the camera. I kept telling them it's only heavy if you have to hold the camera for a long time, but as good as the low light focusing is on the 1 series cameras, we were still holding the camera longer than was comfortable for each shot.
And studio photos were definitely better with the 10D/D60, so despite the incredible athleticism of the 1D, the images just weren't suitable for our needs at the office. I loved the sheer athletic prowess of the 1D, but I just got tired of tweaking images for practically every image, so even as a personal camera, it had its limits.
The new 1D Mk II, on the other hand, is right there with the 10D/D60 in image useability straight from the camera. We shot a whole series of AACD accreditation photos on a patient with no problems, The photos were good to go from the box, and the speed in dim light is noticeably better. In fact, the images are pretty identical in color balance to the 10D/D60 (probably because they all use CMOS sensors instead of the CCD sensor used in the original 1D). The only nit I have is NOISE. Definitely more noise at all ISO settings across the spectrum, even compared to the original 1D. But it's useable in the office, so that works for me. I'll be testing the 1D Mk II in the studio this morning
