Cool Houston: City Between Bayous & Sunset Advertising

Here's a shot of Sunday's sunset in Houston.

I shot about 100 shots of this sunset in the span of a couple of minutes, each time tweaking out my settings. During post processing I settled on this one and then added a touch of Lightroom magic. Shooting directly into the sun, I cranked up my f-stop to f/22 and exposed the image for a 1/15 of a second resulting in awesome flare from the sun!

    Canon EOS 5D Mark II
    Exposure 0.067 sec (1/15)
    Aperture f/22.0
    Focal Length 17 mm
    ISO Speed 200
    Lens Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0

Taken in virtually the same spot and with virtually the same settings as the previous image, I didn't get any flare off the sun on this one due to it being behind the clouds but was still happy with the final result. I used the same Lightroom magic that was applied to previous image.

Pretty good, too bad it's of Houston (Kidding you there .. I lived in Houston once.)

I actually like it better as a 'tell a story' photo. the top one has a nice panoramic view of the downtown area, the highway, and the waterway. The bottom one needs an HDR maybe?

Maybe, but I've never shot in HDR. The only thing, to me, that the bottom photo has going for it is the sky. Aesthetically it's not that great of a shot, the more I look at it, the less I like it.

That first one is a beauty - wonderful sky and the sun flare polishes it off perfectly.
