    Had a strange request about a photo...(m)

I had submitted into April's comp on the betterphoto.com site.

It was a 'finalist' in that month and now I have been asked by a complete stranger by email if they mind if they use the photo as a 'birth' card for their friend's newborn. They did comment that's all they wanted to use it for, not to make money. I dont know what to say. The thing is, he/she has asked permission to use it but they dont want the original, they just want to copy it from the net. I'm thinking, well even if I dont give permission they still will be able to copy it anyway right? So I guess by giving them the permission this allows them to use it this once. What do you think?

I had a weirdo ask for a shots of my daughter when I belonged to betterphoto. Don't give 'em permission. I asked that they provide their info because obviously i didjn't want a total stranger with my kids pics and he just sent me two subsequent emails that got nastier and ruder. beware. the great feature about betterphoto is that they can't right click and save....any image.

send an email declining access and send one to Jim the moderator....good luck...

I would love to see the pic of your daughter at the beach....

Nat, I just tried, and when the notice pops up, just go ahead and save, and you get the image. I am using FIrefox though, that may make a difference.

Cool shot! Can't do it with IE which I've got here, but sometimes Firefox is different. I wouldn't do it... Someone you know, sure - but there are a lot of wierdos out there! They may be honest in what they want, but who knows.

    First off, Nice Shot!

I'd say sure, you can use it onetime only to make a single card. They can already do it so give them permission. You've been given a compliment by someone who appreciates your work. If they wanted it for other reasons, I don't think they'd ask, they'd just do it.

I don't think this is the kind of shot that could be used for weird purposes. If this was a full face where the baby is more identifiable, I might feel differently.

You can always get a shot up to the maximum size that it can be displayed on a screen by pressing alt-printscreen and then pasting it into your edtor and cropping. That would surely make the kind of card being talked about here.

Thanks guys! your opinions are really appreciated

I think as much as I didnt want this guy/girl to use my pic I'm afraid that he probably will anyway. I'm swaying toward Chunk's thoughts. If I say no, they just might do it anyway I guess. I'll just have to keep my eye out in the future for any "hallmark" cards on the market ;)

    First, really nice photo.

I had someone make that request of a New York City skyline shot of mine and they had even laid it out as the background of a poster promoting a college play before emailing it to me. I said okay. One the whole I don't mind someone asking and then using my picture. I'm not in it for the money and I've given shots to non-profit web sites several times now.

I'd be a little more reticent about giving away photos of my kids. Those of you who have been around the site know that I used to post many kid photos but have really gotten away from it as they have gotten older and more recognizable. Posting on the web has its good and bad. We can't share and discuss on sites like this without it, but I kinda feel like the risk of somebody stealing an image here and there is inherent and comes with the territory.
