The Geminids Are Coming

I went out last night to clear skies! I saw several meteors while sitting on the hood of my truck. One was a fantastic, bright green one that sailed slowly across the sky and went behind a hill before it had even burned out. I waited a little too long to get there however, and about an hour after I arrived so did a big bank of clouds.

Before it clouded up however I ran the Mamiya with Portra 400 we'll see if he captured anything. I also pulled out this new-fangled DSLR and popped off a few exposures of the constellations before the clouds took over. The first one is Orion with the clouds creeping in on the bottom right. The second one is Gemini with Mars but this one didn't show as well. I have to say, this little DSLR did pretty well at capturing stars. 20 second exposure each, with a 6 point star filter on to increase the size of the stars.

Cool shots buddy! Looks like the D70 did all right. I'm guessing you used a 28mm lens?

The Geminids are really cool meteors. Partly because they are slow moving and partly because they are so bright. Can't wait to see what you captured with the Mamiya. I got skunked. Which I can't believe happened to me. Oh well....

Oh I forgot to mention I used the 24mm Sigma 2.8 on these which comes out to 36mm I think. This lens combo is also fun for portraiture I am finding

If I'm feeling brave I might go out again tonight. It was definitely worth the trip last night.

Thanks Troy. As an official digital skeptic I was impressed by this camera's ability to capture stars with little noise. Who knew

I went out on Thursday night and had nice clear skies. I saw several meteors to include the slow green one.

However none were captured as my lens fogged up and I didn't know it. :cryin:

I had the lens trained so it would contain Mars, Comet Holmes and Paleades and even though several comets went through the area none were bright enough to penetrate the dew that formed on the lens.

Lesson learned, check the condition of the lens throughout the course of the evening.

Sorry you didn't capture anything. But you tried. I saw some gorgeous meteors over the course of the week, but didn't capture a single one. So I feel your pain.
