This lighthouse was built in 1848 and is the only lighthouse in the United States that stands in the middle of a four lane highway. This lighthouse has survived not only hurricane Katrina in 2005 but also hurricane Camille in 1969 and many others in the last 164 years. This is the most photographed landmark on the coast. The original cost for the lighthouse was $12,000 and they have just finished a $400,000 renovation on it.
