Flicker, good or bad?

You can disable right-click abilities? I never thought about that and only post low-res photos on Flickr. I know you can upload and view different sizes. But I am not sure if there's a way to actually block downloading.

I use it because I find it really easy to use and archive my photos, but frankly, it's a little like leaving your car sitting out on the street unlocked, windows down, and the keys sitting in the ignition. If someone wanted to steal my shots, it's still stealing and it's still illegal, but it's not hard for them to do so.

I also use flicker to store photos and be publicly viewed to share in every part of the world. I could say is that flicker has no restriction of those who are getting photos on it. I've try one's and I did get a photo/images in flicker. Drag the cursor on the picture>right click>save images as... then there you could get the photos.

Not that secure though.

I do not see anything in my account menu that would prevent 'right click' and 'save as', so I think it is not the safest way to show photos. I will stay with them though.

I usually only post smaller sizes on there, but will occasionally post something at 1920x1200 (my monitor size). I also never post anything personal - nothing with my kids or family.

There's a part of me that wonders why I worry - what would be worse, obscurity or notoriety from having my images used? Of course, I don't do this professionally so it's not like it will have an impact on my main revenue stream. I don't think I've got a lot to worry about anyway; the only ones who have requested my pictures have been family and close friends.

Thomas Hawk had a recent post that puts a decidedly different spin on the idea. In short a girl had her photo stolen and used for a porno DVD cover. She sued and won $130K. I've heard of other cases where someone had found their work used elsewhere and they've been paid considerably less, but they were paid nevertheless.

Thanks to everyone for all the replies. I think I will leave my photos off Flickr and for now just have them on my website. It looks to me like it would be a way the get pictures more in the public view but also makes it easier fot other people to get them, Jeff

I don't think you can prevent right clicking, but only disable the "download" option. So, one could technically download either way. You can I believe only opt to display medium sized images, even if you upload very large. I have my settings so that only one size, medium is available for others to view. I think the option is that only I can view my original upload files.
Also, I think to get some of these other options you have to have a Pro Account, which I finally sprung for a few months ago.
