A Few From The Latest Karate Testing

It was different being a black belt, being part of the board, instead of one of those being tested. We (the first degree black belts) still took part though.

Here a few shots from Saturdays testing.

Some shots of Master Moore "playing" with one of his students, and Master Moore with Master Wells (our sensei). I thought about putting a caption on this one: "This is going to be fun...for us!"

Pick on someone your own size.

Flying kicks are fun.

This is going to hurt.

And the last one...Master Moore warned him: "You don't want to go to the mat with him." And he was right!

So does the SPEED mean hands, feet or trigger finger? Congrats on being part of the board. I used to do the same while teaching at UM here in Miami. We were JKA Shotokan under Shigeru Takashina, a slightly built man who could mop any floor with my 6foot, 220 pound Nidan butt.

This looks like fun. It must be an honor sitting on the board! It's nice to see the old masters laughing together.

Speed is a nickname given to me during my early Air Farce days. It was in reference to my running speed. I was a skinny guy with muscular legs. These days I'm working on my hand speed and foot speed. If I want all out speed, I have a .22-250 that'll outrun practically anything. ;-)

Our grandmaster studied Shotokan. And I know what you mean about the little guys that will turn you every which way but loose. Our Sensei (5th degree) stands about 5'5", but heaven help you when he gets his hands on you!

It was a lot of fun. Of course, the fun factor increases when you're not the one being tested.

Master Moore and Master Wells have been friends for over 40 years. Master Moore has come down for every testing that we have had (an 8 hour trip - each way). He has been a friend and a mentor to us. The best part is watching the two of them "play" together".

They already have! I've lost count of how many times I've been punched, kicked, and thrown to the floor by both of them.

You're a funny guy! And no, I don't have to wait for her to hurt herself again. She's learned that trying to break my ribs is a BAD idea. It takes about 2 years to make second degree in our system. So the summer of 2008 is the earliest I would test for 2nd. Then again, I can be slow...
