    Cool technology

This is a laser stereolithography produced prototype.
Demonstrating just how complex they can make things.
    Show-offs !

They use a tank of resin (they don't say exactly what) which hardens when sufficiently illuminated by UV laser. With 3 lasers, one in each axis, they can use x,y,z coordinates from a computer model to produce solid parts. Only where the lasers meet is there enough energy to cure the resin, the rest remains soft and can easily be removed.

Interesting . .could they use this to build a model right from a computer CAD design?

    Yes, that's what it's for.
CAD direct to prototype with no machining, except perhaps polishing or removal of supporting sprues put in place while the model is curing.

Quite incredible. Certainly will cut down on time it takes to get from the drawing board to production . . .and expense involved as well. A huge leap and advantage to industry and design/invention

Somehow, I can see in the distant future the typical family having one of these alongside their computers much like our printers are today. Little John will design a new space ship for his video game and click "build" instead of print and have his toy model in minutes for him to paint and accessorize and show his friends.
