Close Ups of Truck Hood

These are a few shots of the hood of my '56 F100 panel truck, right after I stripped all the primer and filler off of it a couple of years ago. Photos were taken with my ex-girlfriend's point and shoot digital. Don't remember make or model. Lighting was natural, in my back yard.

Hi, the quality of these photos look really good. If you hadn't mentioned it was from a point and shoot, I would have believed it to be a dslr. Great shots, though the framing could be a little better I really love the look. First shot is very nice and welcome

Thanks!! I was REALLY impressed with the quality of those three photos. I agree wholeheartedly about the framing. I was trying to get it all as straight as possible, while lining up the center row of louvers with the center of the frame, while also trying not to step in dog poop. A mild fisheye effect could make them a bit better.

I think the second and third are my favorites, but the colors reflected on the hood and the contrasts of color versus gray steel really do it for me in the first one.

The composition of the first leaves something to be desired.to be interesting. Its a good documentary shot of the work on your truck.
Second pretty much the same but I think your b/w conversion is quite good.
Lots more detail in the third and I like the composition better as an abstract, but then maybe one wouldn't want that much detail in an abstract?

Aha!! Fooled you!! That's actually not B&W conversion, it's just the natural light and the less than favorable automatic settings of the point and shoot camera that I was using at the time.

I agree completely!! The only way to learn and expand is to critique and be critiqued. Thanks for your thoughts!!

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the first shot was taken almost immediately after stripping was completed, in the early evening. The second and third were taken the next morning, which is why the hood is covered in dew. Also, it was pretty overcast that morning, which is why you thought that the second photo had been converted.

Yep, first one is very nice. But seriously point and shoot cameras are good enough to compete with all but the best dlsrs from the past. Glass is the biggest difference.

starriderrick, don't get me started on what I should be doing with my projects!! I have five projects with four wheels, and two with two wheels. I'm going to be busy for years to come. At least now I can document them properly.

daq7, I hear ya. I have a friend who runs his own magazine called Church. It's all automotive closeups and detail shots done entirely with with a simple little P&S. I was amazed when I saw exactly what he was using last year at Bonneville.
