I don't think it's a big deal, personally. I bought my 50 used so there was no warranty with it - but then it's a prime lens with no VR or anything. I'm not a photojournalist beating the crap out of it every day either. Really, I don't use it that often but it's nice to have. I figure that if it's good out of the box, then it's going to be fine. I probably would have bought a non-US if I couldn't find a used one, and I think used is a bigger gamble. Now a 70-200 f2.8 VR lens, that's another story...

    50mm f/1.8 Lens War Thread

I must say that this is a very good lens for the price. As of right now it's the only one I have, but I'm buying more soon. I'm really happy with how most of my pictures have come out.

Might I ask, What exactly do you do to make the edges dark like that? I've always wondered how people do it. Is it a photoedit or something to do with the camera/lens?

time to bring this back to the top ....

all with the 50mm and some with tubes ...
these are also posted in the n&w section

The mother-in-law asked me to come out and take some shots of her flowers ... her big thing is Irises (bearded Irises) so we made it out there yesterday and it rained the whole trip out there then cleared for pictures with the 50mm and tubes in tow ... here is what I got ...

#1 not sure what it is (she told me but I didn't much care ) 50mm with all 3 tubes - handheld - focus is off a bit due to the little wind - seemed like it was swaying 3 feet each way with the tubes

#2 the whole plant of #1 - to show the magnification

    #3 once again not sure - hand held - 50 mm w/ 3 tubes

#4 the whole plant of #3 - to show magnification

#5 I believe she called these firecracker roses ... they will be in bloom next week when we return from vegas ... will get more shots then

#6 not sure again on the flower .. i think this was just the 50mm ... barely anything done to this one ... pretty much straight out of the camera ... colors just burst on this shot

#7 - #9 her Irises - #7 is just starting to open - 8 & 9 are almost completely open ... once again next weekend they should all be in bloom ...

This was taken at my son's band concert. This is in an auditorium with just stage lighting. This is the first time that any picture I have taken at his concerts came out fairly clear and not tinted orange. Custom WB made a big difference there. This was with no flash.

These were shot with the 50mm/1.4 at NYC Orchid show a while back - no flash. Some are a bit soft.

A few portraits shot today up in Oak Glen at f/2.8, no flash. Both kids are grandchildren (cousins to each other) of one of our church members.

I shot these with Sensia slide film on my Canonet too, but I'll have to wait for these.

I found tihs woodend bridge while walking around the Indian Lake State Park. I think the 50mm f/1.8 lens captured it well. This was taken at f/5.6 and 1/250.

Thanks Rick. I'm still stuck in my old film days and hate putting iso up unless I think I absolutely have to.
This one's a bit better but didn't get the dof I wanted. I did get a pretty good window light portrait of my wife but she doesn't like me posting pics of her.

Re: 50mm f/1.8 Lens War Thread

I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by reviving this old thread, but I'm in the market for a camera and my research led me to this thread. I had to register to view the pics, and I was totally blown away by the quality of photography in this thread. I too am a fan of portraits, and there were some really beautiful shots posted.

I'm leaning towards a Canon Eos Xti 400D, but after reading this thread I have decided to purchase only the body so I can buy the 50mm 1.8 MKII lense.

Thanks for having me in this forum, and for posting all your great pics. I look forward to learning how to take such great photos.

    Francisco,

    Welcome to the forum.

No, it's not against any rules to revive old threads. I purchase my XTi about six months ago, I got the kit with the 18-55 lens and also purchase the 50mm. All you have to do is practice and learn from what you shoot.

Give us some back ground on you. Is this your first digital? Do you own a P&S? What are you planning on shooting with your new XTi?

Have fun and post some pictures when you get your new camera. Also ask as many questions that you can, a really great place and people to help you out.

    James

Re: 50mm f/1.8 Lens War Thread

Hello, and thank you for the kind welcome.

Yes this will be my first digital camera. I do own a point and shoot, a Kodac Easy Share 7525.

My interests as far as subjects are varied. Mostly portrait, but I also do some wood working that I would like to photograph, as well was gardening. I also play around with a guitar from time to time, and have recently discovered flamenco guitar which I have fallen in love with. So, in that arena, I will sometimes photograph anything from guitars to dancers both at live shows or practice. I also dabble in electronics, and take some macro shots of the pieces I'm working on. Why I have waited so long to upgrade my camera is a mystery to me.

Right out of highschool (which seems so long ago) I worked for a photography company that specialized in school photos and team sports, but that is where I learned a little about how to frame a shot as well as a few basics about lighting. The company supplied us with a Nikon N90, which took incredible shots.

I'm looking forward to getting back into photography, and think the Canon Xti will be a good place to start as far as the camera is concerned.

Welcome from me, too, friel. I've learned so much since joining these forums and there is so much variety here. I'm glad you revived the old thread as it needs some fresh shots.

Welcome to the forum! I own the XTi and LOVE it! I also have experience with the 50mm/f1.8 - and as you can see, it's a favorite around here. It's one of Canon's best - if not the best - less expensive lenses. Great in low light too.

When you get your camera, be sure to add your shots to this thread - or one of the other 50mm threads.....there are a few.
